Physical examination showed no signs of injury due to the accident. Magnetic resonance imaging of the neck revealed a well-demarcated lesion showing homogeneous contrast enhancement at the level of C1-2. The patient underwent elective surgery, and histopathological diagnosis of the surgical specimen was made as cervical schwannoma. His neurological complaints disappeared on the second postoperative day. No neurological deficit was observed at six-month follow-up. To our knowledge, there has been no literature report in which the diagnosis of cervical schwannoma was made during investigation of trauma-induced neurological symptoms.Item Deaths in the Turkish hamam (hot bath)(Comenius University, 2009) Akan, Okan; Eren, Bülent; Fedakar, Recep; Türkmen, Nursel; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Tıp Fakültesi/Adli Tıp Anabilim Dalı.; 0000-0002-8296-5484; AAH-6287-2021; AAK-8096-2021; 8725969000; 8725968900; 8715251700Hamam (Hot Bath) culture is prevalent worldwide. The high temperature and humidity of these places have multiple effects on human health. The aim of this study was to investigate the demographic characteristics, autopsy findings and causes of death of cases who died in hamam and underwent medicolegal autopsies. The study was performed on 15 cases who experienced sudden death or died suspiciously in hamam and autopsied between January 1999 and December 2004. Eleven cases were men and 4 were women. Mean age was 69.5 +/- 3.1 and median age was 74. Eight cases were found dead in a bathtub or pool whereas seven were found out of water. Six of the cases older than 65 died in winter months. The causes of death were recorded as acute cardiac failure in 13 cases, pneumonia and cardiac failure in one, pneumonia and acute pancreatitis in the last case. Elderly patients with cardiac failure and coronary heart disease experience significant health problems in saunas and hamams. They should avoid this tradition unless approved by their physicians.Item The postman always rings twice: Two cases of shotgun deaths associated with an unconventional home security alarm system(Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2014-06) Aşırdizer, Mahmut; Akan, Okan; Yavuz, Mehmet Sunay; Türkmen, Nursel; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Tıp Fakültesi/Adli Tıp Anabilim Dalı.; 8715251700Injury and death cases caused by booby traps are not common in forensic medicine practice. Besides, installation of booby traps including firearms is generally for suicidal and rarely for homicidal purposes. Although few patents were described about home security alarm system that were created by firearms in the United States, 1 sample of injury with a similar unconventional mechanism of home safety system was reported by Asirdizer and Yavuz in 2009. In the published case report, the story of an electrical technician who was invited to a summer house by the homeowner to check the home security alarm system was reported. In the so-called report, he was stated to be injured by the shotgun attached to the unconventional home security alarm system while checking the system. As a result, the homeowner was convicted of a possible intent to cause a life-threatening injury to the technician. The so-called homeowner and his wife died by the same shotgun attached to the same unconventional home security alarm system 4 years on from the first event. In the present case report, we have aimed to present the findings of the crime scene and the autopsies of these unusual 2 deaths and to discuss individual and legal factors in paving the way for the deaths of 2 people.Publication Two accidental hanging cases of children(Pakistan Medical Assoc, 2015-07-01) Gök, Ertuğrul; Çetin, Selçuk; Baduroğlu, Erol; Fedakar, Recep; Akan, Okan; Saka, Naile Esra; Gök, Ertuğrul; FEDAKAR, RECEP; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Tıp Fakültesi; 0000-0003-1573-283X; JJF-8712-2023; AAH-6287-2021The cases emphasise the implementation of safety measurements which may prevent the occurrence of accidental hanging in children. The inquest papers written by police were examined and the scenes and autopsy findings are presented. The first case was a four year old girl and the second case was a five year old boy. Their manners of death were determined as an accident. The first accident occurred out of home, but the second accidental hanging occurred at home. It was seen that childhood deaths due to hanging are preventable. Detailed medico-legal investigation in order to elucidate the manner of death is required in similar cases.
