A total of 1,150 married men aged 18 and up, who had received primary health care in a defined period were the participants. The lifetime prevalence of wife beating was 29.0%. Of the men studied, 42.7% were themselves victims of physical violence during childhood. About 17.9% of the participants thought that they had the right to beat their wives. Significant predictors in logistic regression analysis included women's low education (OR=2.8; 95%CI=1.26-6.46), number of children (OR=2.4; 95%CI=1.34-4.51), childhood beatings (OR=1.6; 95%CI=1.25-2.16) and alcohol intake (OR=1.9; 95%CI=1.49-2.63).Wife beating is a problem in Turkey. To change male attitudes, alcohol abuse control interventions and child abuse prevention should be implemented.Publication BRCA1/2 germline mutations and their clinical importance in Turkish breast cancer patients(Taylor & Francis Inc, 2014-10-01) Çeçener, Gülşah; Egeli, Ünal; Tunca, Berrin; Ertürk, Elif; Ak, Seçil; Gökgöz, Şehsuvar; Taşdelen, İsmet; Tezcan, Gülçin; Demirdoğen, Elif; Bayram, Nuran; Avcı, Nilüfer; Evrensel, Türkkan; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Tıp Fakültesi/Tıbbi Biyoloji Anabilim Dalı; Uludağ Üniversitesi/İktisadi ve İdari Bilimler Fakültesi/Ekonometri Anabilim Dalı; 0000-0002-3820-424X; 0000-0001-7904-883X; 0000-0002-1619-6680; 0000-0002-3760-9755; 0000-0002-5956-8755; F-8554-2017; AAH-3843-2020; ABI-6078-2020; AAP-9988-2020; AAK-3371-2021; ADM-8457-2022; AAJ-1027-2021; JFK-4021-2023; AAH-1420-2021; JQI-3400-2023; JDE-9426-2023; EXK-4525-2022; EBN-1186-2022; ERW-8812-2022; CCT-7946-2022BRCA1/BRCA2 genes were screened in 117 patients with breast cancer by sequencing. Fourteen percent of patients tested positive for BRCA1/BRCA2 mutations. Four frame shift mutations, four pathogenic missense mutations, and 25 different sequence variations were detected. BRCA mutation positivity was significantly associated with Ki67 (p =.001). BRCA protein expressions were decreased in the patients harboring important mutations and polymorphisms (BRCA1; P508stop, V1740G, Q1182R, Q1756P and BRCA2; V2466A) related with disease. Our findings contribute significantly to the types of germline BRCA1/BRCA2 mutations and their biological effects in Turkish women. These data could help guide the management of BRCA1/BRCA2 mutation-carrying patients when considering breast-conserving therapy.Item Bullying in Turkish white-collar workers(Oxford Univ Press, 2006) Bilgel, Nazan; Aytaç, Serpil; Bayram, Nuran; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Tıp Fakültesi/Aile Hekimliği Anabilim Dalı.; 0000-0001-5492-184X; 0000-0001-6659-4639; 0000-0002-4539-5849; AAG-9068-2021; I-7814-2019; 7801564702; 56835333800; 13609585600Objectives To determine the prevalence of reported workplace bullying among a group of white-collar workers, to evaluate the association between reported bullying and its effect on health and to assess the effects of support at work for bullied workers. Methods A cross-sectional questionnaire survey among full-time government employees in the health, education and security sectors. Bullying was assessed using a 20-item inventory. The potential effects of reported bullying were assessed using the Job Induced Stress Scale, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Job Satisfaction Scale and the Propensity to Leave Scale. Results The response rate was 79% (944/1200) and 877 questionnaires were analysed after exclusion of non-complete data. Of respondents, 55% (483) reported experiencing one or more types of bullying in the previous year and 47% (416) had witnessed the bullying of others. The bully was most likely to be a superior. Sixty per cent of victims had tried to take action against bullying, but most were dissatisfied with the outcome. There were significant differences in anxiety, depression, job-induced stress and support at work scores between those reporting bullying and those not reporting bullying at work. Those who reported bullying with low support at work had the poorest scores on the mental health scales. Conclusions Bullying is a serious problem in this group of workers and may lead to health consequences. Feeling that the work environment is supportive appears to have a protective effect in terms of the health outcomes.Publication Burnout among Turkish high school teachers working in Turkey and abroad: A comparative study(Univ Almeria, 2009-12-05) Aydoğan, İsmail; Doğan, Ahmet Atilla; Bayram, Nuran; BAYRAM ARLI, NURAN; Uludağ Üniversitesi/İktisadi ve İdari Bilimler Fakültesi.; JFK-4021-2023Introduction. The purpose of this study was to examine perceived levels of burnout among Turkish high school teachers working in Turkey and abroad.Method. A total of 255 Turkish teachers working at public schools in Germany (n=78), Cyprus (n=94) and Turkey (n=83) comprised our study group. In Germany and Cyprus, the participants were selected from different public high schools in different cities where Turkish teachers taught the Turkish language. In Turkey, the participants were all teachers in one public high school. Participation was voluntary. Participants filled out questionnaires anonymously. Burnout was measured using the Shirom-Melamed Burnout Measure.Results. Eighty point eight percent of participants from Germany, 84.0% from Cyprus and 81.9% from Turkey were satisfied with their workplace. The mean burnout scores were 2.78 +/- 0.98, 3.22 +/- 1.03 and 2.67 +/- 1.07 for participants from Germany, Cyprus and Turkey, respectively. Variance analysis showed no difference regarding burnout among teachers working in Germany and Turkey, but those working in Cyprus had higher burnout scores. Among the teachers working in Turkey, demographic factors were not found to affect burnout. For the participants from Turkey and Cyprus, depression was found to be an important factor in burnout, whereas for the participants from Germany, job satisfaction had greater significance.Discussion. We found that burnout is a common problem among Turkish teachers working both in Turkey and abroad. According to their mean burnout scores, we did not find significant differences between teachers working in Turkey and Germany, but those working in Cyprus had significantly higher scores.Item CK19, CK20, EGFR and HER2 status of circulating tumor cells in patients with breast cancer(Sage Publications, 2012) Tunca, Berrin; Egeli, Ünal; Çeçener, Gülşah; Tezcan, Gülçin; Gökgöz, Şehsuvar; Taşdelen, İsmet; Bayram, Nuran; Tolunay, Şahsine; Umut, Görkem; Demirdöğen, Elif; Ertürk, Elif; Ak, Seçil; Çetintaş, Sibel; Evrensel, Türkkan; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Tıp Fakültesi/Tıbbi Biyoloji Anabilim Dalı.; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Tıp Fakültesi/Genel Cerrahi Anabilim Dalı.; Uludağ Üniversitesi/İktisadi ve İdari Bilimler Fakültesi/Ekonometri Bölümü.; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Tıp Fakültesi/Patoloji Anabilim Dalı.; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Tıp Fakültesi/Radyasyon Onkolojisi Anabilim Dalı.; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Tıp Fakültesi/Tıbbi Onkoloji Anabilim Dalı.; 0000-0001-5492-184X; 0000-0002-9732-5340; 0000-0002-3820-424X; 0000-0001-7904-883X; 0000-0002-1619-6680; 0000-0002-5956-8755; 0000-0002-9038-0515; 0000-0002-4483-9284; AAG-9068-2021; AAA-7047-2020; AAH-3843-2020; AAJ-1027-2021; AAP-9988-2020; AAH-1420-2021; ABI-6078-2020; AAI-1612-2021; F-8554-2017; 6602965754; 55665145000; 6508156530; 25650627600; 6603238737; 9637821500; 13609585600; 6602604390; 37058220200; 25644460900; 50261655300; 55253485700; 6505881756; 6603942124Aims and background. The major cause of death in breast cancer patients is metastasis. Various biomarkers have been used for the early detection of circulating tumor cells in the peripheral blood of breast cancer patients. The aims of the current study were to analyze circulating tumor cells in the blood of breast cancer patients by investigating EGFR, CK19, CK20 and HER2 expression profiles and to evaluate their prognostic importance. Methods. CK19, CK20 and EGFR gene expression profiles were evaluated in the blood samples of 84 female patients with primary invasive ductal breast cancer and 20 healthy female volunteers using SYBR green-based real-time qPCR assays. HER2 expression analyses were conducted in 46 patients who had an HER2-positive primary tumor and in 30 healthy women to determine the cutoff level of positivity. Results. The positive rates of CK20, EGFR, CK19 and HER2 mRNA expression in the peripheral blood were 28.57% (24/84), 20.23% (17/84), 5.95% (5/84) and 2.17% (1/46), respectively. The high positive ratio of CK20 mRNA expression in the peripheral blood of breast cancer was identified for the first time in the current study. Significant differences were identified in CK20 expression status and several clinical parameters related with aggressiveness of tumors using a binary logistic regression analysis. Higher CK20-positive levels were observed in patients who had lymph node metastasis and advanced-grade primary tumors, which were estrogen receptor-negative. We have demonstrated that CK20 may be a novel biomarker that is useful to identify circulating tumor cells and predict breast cancer progression. Conclusions. The results suggest that the investigation of CK20 mRNA with other biomarkers in the peripheral blood of breast cancer patients may be useful to monitor the presence of disseminated tumor cells in the blood circulation and to predict the prognosis of breast cancer.Item Counterproductive work behavior among white-collar employees: A study from Turkey(Wiley, 2009-06) Bayram, Nuran; Gürsakal, Necmi; Bilgel, Nazan Gönül; Uludağ Üniversitesi/İktisadi ve İdari Bilimler Fakültesi/Ekonometri Bölümü.; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Tıp Fakültesi/Aile Hekimliği Anabilim Dalı.; 0000-0001-5492-184X; 0000-0002-4539-5849; AAG-9068-2021; 13609585600; 26429334100; 7801564702The current study was designed to evaluate the magnitude and types of counterproductive work behaviors (CWBs) among a group of white-collar employees from different firms. A total of 766 employees voluntarily participated in our study. We focused especially on employees' perceptions of their work environment and on their affective responses to those perceptions. Data were dependent on self-reporting and privacy, and anonymity measures were taken into account. The five different instruments used to evaluate job satisfaction were, organizational constraints, interpersonal conflict, quantitative workload and CWB. We found a high degree of job satisfaction, a minimal quantitative workload and a limited exhibition of CWBs among our sample. Organizational constraints were found to be the most strongly correlated to exhibited CWBs, followed by interpersonal conflict and quantitative workload. Job satisfaction had a diminishing effect on CWBs. Among the five dimensions of CWBs, abuse and withdrawal were found to be the most important. The most frequently reported CWB was 'came to work late without permission.' Except for income we found no statistically significant relationship between demographic characteristics and the exhibition of CWBs. We concluded that by abolishing pre-existing organizational constraints there may be a reduction in CWBs.Item Emotional labor and burnout at work: A study from Turkey(Elsevier, 2012) Dursun, Salih; Gaol, F. L.; Bayram, Nuran; Aytaç, Serpil; Uludağ Üniversitesi/İktisadi ve İdari Bilimler Fakültesi.; 0000-0001-6659-4639; 0000-0001-5492-184X; I-7814-2019; AAG-9068-2021The aim of this study was to evaluate which variables of emotional labor dimensions have a significant effect in explaining the levels of burnout of employees in the service sector. The study participants ranged in age from 23 years to 56 years, approximately 61% were female, 52% were married and the mean duration of their work was calculated as 8.33 +/- 6.65 years. No statistically significant difference was found in the emotional labor and burnout variables from the results of the analysis according to gender. The highest relationship obtained in the emotional labor scale subdimensions was between faking emotions and hiding emotions (r=0.44, p<0.01). In the explanation of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization levels of the employees, the hiding emotions variable of the emotional labor variable was found to be statistically significant.Item Evaluating of BRCA1 and BRCA2 Germ-line mutations and BRCA risk assessment of mutation carriers in Turkish breast cancer patients(Elsevier, 2012-07) Çeçener, Gülşah; Egeli, Ünal; Tunca, Berrin; Ertürk, Elif; Gökgöz, Şehsuvar; Taşdelen, İsmet; Ak, Seçil; Demirdoğen, Elif; Tezcan, Gülçin; Bayram, Nuran; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Tıp Fakültesi/Tıbbi Biyoloji Anabilim Dalı.; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Tıp Fakültesi/Genel Cerrahi Anabilim Dalı.; Uludağ Üniversitesi/İktisadi ve İdari Bilimler Fakültesi/Ekonometri Bölümü.; 0000-0002-3820-424X; 0000-0001-5492-184X; 0000-0001-7904-883X; 0000-0002-1619-6680; AAG-9068-2021; AAH-1420-2021; AAK-3371-2021; AAH-3843-2020; ABI-6078-2020; F-8554-2017Item Factors influencing information security management in small- and medium-sized enterprises: A case study from Turkey(Elsevier, 2011-08) Yıldırım, Ebru Yeniman; Akalp, Gizem; Aytaç, Serpil; Bayram, Nuran; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Teknik Bilimler Meslek Yüksekokulu/Bilgisayar Teknolojileri Bölümü.; Uludağ Üniversitesi/İktisadi ve İdari Bilimler Fakültesi.; 0000-0001-5492-184X; 0000-0001-6659-4639; 0000-0003-1801-784X; B-5405-2016; AAG-9068-2021; AAK-4195-2021; I-7814-2019; 56030601600; 36605852500; 56835333800; 13609585600The aims of the study were to examine enterprise information security in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Bursa, Turkey and to compare the results with similar data gathered from different countries. This study was conducted through questionnaires consisting of 49 questions grouped into 9 sections. The questionnaires were delivered to 97 SMEs in Bursa, Turkey. The companies have been operating for 15.93 +/- 11.67 (2-54) years. The number of PCs in the companies and their years of use were in the ranges of 53.51 +/- 64.88(2-240) and 12.47 +/- 6.32(1-30) years, respectively. According to the findings of this study, it can be speculated that when Communications and Operations Management and security policy improve, other security parameters in the companies, such as Organizational. Personnel and Physical and Environmental Securities improve as well. In addition, the results have shown that Turkish companies do not attach as much importance to information technology security as their counterpart companies from different countries do.Item Flexible working and employment of people with disabilities at customs brokerage firms in Turkey: A social responsibility project(Elsevier, 2012) Özenalp, Ahmet; Berkun, Sanem; Ceylan, Ali; Ertürk, Hasan; Gaol, F. L.; Aytaç, Serpil; Bayram, Nuran; Özgökçeler, Serhat; Uludağ Üniversitesi/İktisadi ve İdari Bilimler Fakültesi.; 0000-0001-5492-184X; 0000-0001-6659-4639; AAG-9068-2021; I-7814-2019The ratio of the disabled population is higher in Turkish society than the world average. Previous studies on this topic have been limited to statistical surveys and no firm theoretical bases have been established in the investigation of the perception of disability in Turkish society. Approximately 8.5 million disabled citizens in Turkey - about 12 % of the overall population - face many difficulties, the greatest of which is unemployment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the employment of disabled people as tele-workers working from home for Turkish Customs brokerage companies. This project is a social responsibility project to enable participation in social life and provide a career for disabled people in Customs brokerage firms. This project was implemented by Uludag University in partnership with the Bursa Industrialists and Businessmen Association (BUSIAD). In this study, we will discuss how Customs brokerage firms can employ disabled people working at home using a tee-working system.Item Job related affective well-being among primary health care physicians(Oxford University, 2007-10) Yeşim, Uncu; Bayram, Nuran; Bilgel, Nazan; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Tıp Fakültesi/ Aile Hekimliği Anabilim Dalı.; Uludağ Üniversitesi/İktisadi ve İdari Bilimler Fakültesi/Ekonometri Bölümü.; 0000-0001-5492-184X; 0000-0002-5225-4403; 0000-0002-4539-5849; D-9597-2016; AAG-9068-2021; 8892370600; 13609585600; 7801564702Background: Job related affective well-being is important for a healthy life and job satisfaction for all individuals, including physicians. The later group, however, is most often compromised. Objectives: We aimed to investigate a group of Turkish primary health care physicians' job related emotional perceptions and to assess their reactions in terms of stress, anxiety and depression. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional, self-reported questionnaire study was conducted. A total of 60 primary health care centres and 274 general practitioners who were working at these centres participated in the study. The response rate was 74%. Printed questionnaires were completed by the participants anonymously. We used the Job Related Affective Well-Being Scale (JAWS) and Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS 42). Correlation analysis and hierarchic regression were performed. Results: Correlations between JAWS and DASS total scores were negative and statistically significant (r = -0.52; P< 0.01). Low pleasure/high arousal (LPHA) and low pleasure/low arousal (LPLA) variations that describe negative emotional states show a positive and significant relationship with depression, anxiety and stress values. The highest mean score was obtained for the high pleasure/low arousal (HPLA) status that can be interpreted to mean that our study group was pleased with their job but was not motivated. Conclusions: Physician's job related negative emotional perceptions are associated with reactions in terms of stress, anxiety and depression. For this reason, it is critical to consider primary care physicians' job related affectations and job related stimuli. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationships among poverty, social exclusion, and life satisfaction by structural equation modelling. This cross-sectional study of 2,493 randomly selected participants showed that approximately 29.0% of the variation in social exclusion could be explained by the effects of age, poverty, and life satisfaction. People who are poor, with lower life satisfaction, and are young feel themselves to be more socially excluded.Item The prevalence and socio-demographic correlations of depression, anxiety and stress among a group of university students(Springer, 2008-04) Bayram, Nuran; Bilgel, Nazan; Uludağ Üniversitesi/İktisadi ve İdari Bilimler Fakültesi/Ekonometri Bölümü.; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Tıp Fakültesi/Aile Hekimliği Anabilim Dalı.; 13609585600; 7801564702Background The mental health of university students is an area of increasing concern worldwide. The objective of this study is to examine the prevalence of depression, anxiety and stress among a group of Turkish university students. Methods Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-42) completed anonymously in the students' respective classrooms by 1,617 students. Results Depression, anxiety and stress levels of moderate severity or above were found in 27.1, 47.1 and 27% of our respondents, respectively. Anxiety and stress scores were higher among female students. First-and second-year students had higher depression, anxiety and stress scores than the others. Students who were satisfied with their education had lower depression, anxiety and stress scores than those who were not satisfied. Conclusions The high prevalence of depression, anxiety and stress symptoms among university students is alarming. This shows the need for primary and secondary prevention measures, with the development of adequate and appropriate support services for this group.
