Item Degradation of phenol in nutrient broth by pseudomonas and bacillus species using biosimulator(Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2019-12-08) Jabeen, Suraiya; Khan, Moazzam AliPhenol is a cognizant industrial contaminant in wastewaters from various industries, in this bioremedial study three isolated cultures IES.S, IES.Ps and IES.B separately and all in consortia (10%) from industrial wastes were grown in 1500 ml nutrient broth in sterile condition with 600 mg/l Phenol in the Biotron fermenter vessel, with specific conditions of rpm, DO. pH, temperature, COD and phenol was determined at specific interval of time. The results of this study showed that the pH of the system mostly remained acidic. The DO concentration was sustained at 5.0 mg/l. Phenol removal by IES.S was 15.50% (42 hours) and 18.83% (90 hours). Phenol removal percentage was much higher with IES.Ps as compared to that of IES.S. After 42 hours the phenol percentage removal efficiency was 32.10%. While at the end of the experimental run about 40% phenol was removed. While using IES.B Phenol removal efficiency was 32.16 (42 hours) and 39.53 % (90 hours). Phenol removal efficiency was relatively higher than IES.S and relatively lower than IES.Ps. Phenol removal was 31.57% (42 hours) and 39.38 % (90 hours) by using consortia of all three cultures. The degradation rates by using three different isolates were in descending order Consortium>IES.Ps>IES.B>IES.S.Item Generation and composition of municipal solid waste in Karachi(Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2022-05-13) Shahid, Muhammad; Ahmed, Waqar; Arif, Afsheen; Jabeen, SuraiyaMega city Karachi has its discrepancies in solid waste management. According to this study, Karachi city currently generates more than 20,000 ton per day (TPD) of municipal solid waste (MSW), 1.244Kg/c/d, and 7.464Kg/h/d. Only 50% of the waste reached at the land filled site that is 9216.468 t/d and the total capacity of both the landfill sites is 9500 t/d. The composition of MSW is also assessed in summer and winter 2019 to 2020 and it was found that MSW containing the waste in the following order: organic waste >plastic waste > paper waste>textile waste> tetra brick aseptic packaging waste>diapers > nappies. This study investigates the system of the current solid waste management in Karachi city according to collection, transportation, and disposal to MSW dumping site and pinpoint the weakness in every process along the way and includes observation and interviews to deal with actual scenario as well. A total 300 respondents were then interviewed using elaborated questionnaire. The results were appealing against the current strategies of civic agencies responsible for solid waste management, it is an effort to secure people from serious health effects. The future solid waste generation has been estimated till 2030 is to be 25669.193 tons/d based on growth rate of 2.53%. The research had concluded that recycling as well as process treatment is the best strategy to eliminate or reduce the volume of waste using state of the art techniques to secure the natural recourses.Item Hazard and operability study of condensate oil refinery(Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2020-10-20) Arif, Hira; Hamza, Muhammad; Raja, Zamun Asif; Jabeen, Suraiya; Ishteyaque, ShaguftaPetroleum refineries are multifaceted and complex systems that perform multiple phase operations characterized by a high level of risk. The size and complexity of petroleum refinery, together with the nature of the products handled, require Hazard and operability (HAZOP) methodology. HAZOP is one of the best tools used in various oil refineries globally based on guidewords for all hazardous conditions with strong recommendation. The application of HAZOP has been demonstrated in the condensate oil exploration unit, based in Sindh. In this research paper about 12 deviations were documented with 34 possible causes and 46 predicted consequences. However, to make the system hazard free 3 nodes were selected on the piping and instrumentation diagram of condensate splitter, based on selected nodes 48 actions were proposed in counter of the deviations.
