Item Serologic survey for selected disease agents in brown bears (Ursus arctos) from Karacabey sanctuary (Bursa, Turkey).(Aeema-Assoc L Etude L Epidemiologie Maladies Animales, 2009) Roqueplo, Cedric; Marie, Jean-Lou; Davoust, Bernard; Toma, B.; Cihan, Hüseyin; Aytuğ, Nilüfer; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Veterinerlik Fakültesi/İç Hastalıkları Anabilim Dalı.; ABH-3742-2020Sixty brown bears (Ursus arctos) (51 adults, 9 subadults / 21 female, 39 male) were chemically immobilized with ketamine hydrochloride and xylazine hydrochloride and sampled at Karacabey Ovakorusu Bear Sanctuary-Bursa, Turkey. All bears were clinically healthy at the time of sampling. Serum samples were tested for the presence of antibodies to Canine distemper virus (CDV), Canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV-2), Canine adenovirus type 1 (CAV-1), Leptospira interrogans serovars, Brucella spp., Borrelia burgdorferi, Ehrlichia canis, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Leishmania infantum, Toxoplasma gondii, and Dirofilaria immitis. Serologic evidence of exposure was found to the following agents: Leptospira spp. (n=39) 65%, T. gondii (n=12) 20%, and CDV (n=25) 41.6% (with low titers: 1/2 - 1/11), whereas no antibodies were detected against CAV-1, CPV-2, Brucella spp., B. burgdorferi, Ehrlichia canis, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Leishmania infantum, and Dirofilaria immitis. In conclusion the data obtained in this study, provide results on the seroprevalence of selected infectious diseases, and emphasize the need for research and protection against infectious diseases of brown bears in Turkey.Item Silent threat: subclinical canine monocytic ehrlichiosis in stray dogs in Turkey(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2010-12-28) Davoust, Bernard; Marie, Jean-Lou; Casalı, Fanny; Parzy, Daniel; Cihan, Hüseyin; Temizel, E. Mutlu; Aytuğ, Nilüfer; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Veteriner Fakültesi.Canine monocytic ehrlichiosis has been recognized as an important world-wide canine infectious disease. Thrombocytopenia, leucopenia and normocytic, normochromic anemia are among the major laboratory findings. In this study, 160 stray dogs randomly selected to represent the stray dog population in Ayvalik, Burhaniye, Dikili, Edremit, Bergama region, were tested using IFA to detect antibodies against Ehrlichia canis. The development of methods of in vitro cultivation of E. canis led to the use of the IFA serologic test for detection and titration of anti-E. canis antibodies in dogs. One hundred and eleven of 160 dogs were found seropositive (69.4%) including 69.9% (65/93) of the males and 68.7% (46/67) of the females. There were no significant sex differences. All the dogs were clinically healthy. Thrombocytopenia (<200000 µl-1) was the most common hematological abnormality (p<0,001) (80 %). Total leukocyte counts of the seropositive dogs were lower than in seronegative dogs (p < 0.001), although none of the dogs were leukopenic except in two cases. The results of the present study highlight the importance of canine monocytic ehrlichiosis in Aegean region of Turkey and suggest the need for further impact studies.
