Item The effect and legacy of colonialism in modern Indonesia foreign policy(Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2024-07-18) Ramadhan, Jelang; Özlem, Kader; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi / Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü / Uluslararası İlişkiler Anabilim Dalı / Uluslararası İlişkiler Bilim Dalı; 0000-0002-9050-4565Modern International Relations (IR) in Southeast Asia strongly shaped by the colonialism dates back 16th century until decolonization era takes turn after World War II (WWII). Indonesia as a maritime archipelagic country is one of key-driving actors, not only in Southeast Asia, but Indo-Pacific too. The direct colonialism by European countries in Indonesia started 1800s created the common experience as a nation shared destiny and pushed forward the idea of Bebas-Aktif principle for Indonesian foreign policy. By utilizing post-colonial theories, such as post-colonialism and post-structuralism, this research examines the history of modern Indonesia and the philosophy of nation's foreign policy in overcoming challenges. Under the framework of qualitative research design, the dissertation attempts to answer the past relations with the legacy left in Indonesia and to what extent the colonialism influences modern Indonesian foreign policy. The paper written inductively to pursue a theory-making process and theorization in provincializing Euro-American centricism as the post-colonial resources utilized to strengthen the qualitative methods. Hence, the historical root, global political contestation and constellation are robustly influencing the pattern of Indonesian foreign policy in order toachieve the national interest, reduce the security threat, comply with the constitution order and actively contribute to the perpetuation of peace in the world. The experience of colonialism is the determinant factor for Indonesian envisioning global peace order and facing insurgencies arose from colonial legacy. Therefore, the utilization of soft power combined with the rising hard power capacity make Indonesia more viable option in the near future as one of the major powers not only in region, but global as well.
