Publication Effects of separation space diameter on the performance of a novel reverse flow cyclone(Taylor, 2019-10-13) Sakin, Ali; Karagöz, İrfan; Avcı, Atakan; KARAGÖZ, İRFAN; AVCI, ATAKAN; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Mühendislik Fakültesi/Makine Mühendisliği Bölümü; 0000-0002-7442-2746; AAB-9388-2020A numerical study was carried out to investigate the effect of separation space diameter on the performance of a novel reverse flow tangential inlet cyclone design by using the Eulerian-Lagrangian approach. The design of this cyclone is based on the idea of increasing vortex length and decreasing pressure drop compared with traditional cyclones. This novel cyclone differs from the traditional cyclones with separation space and vortex limiter instead of the conical part. A qualitative numerical study was performed to analyze the effect of separation space diameter on the cyclone performance at different flow rates by evaluating velocity profile, pressure drop, fractional and overall efficiencies. The results show that the collection efficiency of smaller particles increases while pressure drop decreases significantly with the increase in separation space diameter for D-1/D < 0.5.Item Experimental investigation of sheet metal forming using a recyclable low melting point alloy tool(Walter de Gruyter, 2016-05) Ünver, Ertu; Jagger, Brian; Doruk, Emre; Fındık, Fehim; Durgun, İsmail; Sakin, Ali; Kuş, Abdil; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Teknik Bilimler Meslek Yüksekokulu/Makine ve Metal Teknolojileri Bölümü.; AAG-9412-2021; 57196667786Due to intense competition in automotive industry, new car models have to be launched as quickly as possible. A re-evaluation of the design and development phases has reshaped product development in order to get product earlier than competitors. Prototype production is one of the longest stages of product development due to physical verification activities. Shortening of this process will provide more opportunity to get project schedule earlier. Rapid prototype technologies are usually used as a guide for visual and packaging analysis. However, there is a requirement to use these parts for functional testing as well. Developing alternative rapid tooling methods which shorten the physical prototype production phase, while adequately supporting visual, packaging and functional aspects of sheet metal forming, can lead to considerable savings in vehicle prototype development. In this study, sheet metal prototype part using recyclable low melting point alloy was experimentally investigated by analysing dimensional conformance of tools and parts. In addition to wear performance, thickness reduction was investigated for stamped parts.Item Flow and heat transfer characteristics over rectangular blocked surfaces(Taylor & Francis, 2016-09-02) Sakin, Ali; Umur, Habib; Yemenici, Habib; Umur, Yeliz; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Mühendislik Mimarlık Fakültesi/Makine Mühendisliği Bölümü.; AAK-4598-2021; 6602945164; 36676656200; 57191961457Heat transfer and flow measurements were recorded over blocked surfaces to investigate the effects of flow velocity and block shape on flow separation and heat transfer. The results indicated that the flow separation occurred particularly on the first block and after the last blocks. The flow separation and block thickness resulted in higher turbulence and heat transfer, particularly in laminar flow. The average Stanton number increased as high as 125% in laminar, 80% in transitional, and 50% in turbulent flows above those of flat plate values. A new empirical equation indicated a good agreement with the experimental and numerical results.Item An investigation into the use of a cyclone separator in the intake air system and its influence on the engine performance(Sage Puplications Ltd, 2018) Sakin, Ali; Ergül, Murat; Demirtaş, Ünal; Savaş, Fatih Hakkı; Karagöz, İrfan; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Mühendislik Mimarlık Fakültesi/Makine Mühendisliği Bölümü.; 0000-0002-7442-2746; AAB-9388-2020; 56785809700Filters are used to decontaminate the particles from the outside environment entering different subsystems of vehicles. Conventional air filters can cause a significant pressure drop in the intake air system because of their porous structure. In this study, a cyclone separator was designed and manufactured for the air intake system of an automobile. The pressure drop and the performance parameters of the engine were measured by using a conventional air filter or a cyclone separator in the air intake system. Futhermore, a computational fluid dynamics analysis of the cyclone separator was performed, and the results were compared with the experimental data.Item Numerical investigation of surface roughness effects on the flow field in a swirl flow(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2014-03-27) Sakin, Ali; Karagöz, İrfan; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Mühendislik-Mimarlık Fakültesi/Makine Mühendisliği Bölümü.The aim of this study is to investigate axial and tangential velocity profiles, turbulent dissipation rate, turbulent kinetic energy and pressure losses under the influence of surface roughness for the swirling flow in a cyclone separator. The governing equations for this flow were solved by using Fluent CFD code. First, numerical analyses were run to verify numerical solution and domain with experimental results. Velocity profiles, turbulent parameters and pressure drops were calculated by increasing inlet velocity from 10 to 20 m/s and roughness height from 0 to 4 mm. Analyses of results showed that pressure losses are decreased and velocity field is considerably affected by increasing roughness height.Item Numerical prediction of short-cut flows in gas-solid reverse flow cyclone separators(Assoc Chemical Engineering, 2017-01-13) Sakin, Ali; Karagöz, İrfan; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Mühendislik Mimarlık Fakültesi/Makine Mühendisliği Bölümü.; 0000-0002-7442-2746; AAB-9388-2020; 56785809700The effect of operational and geometrical parameters on the short-cut flow in cyclone separators has been investigated computationally using the Reynolds stress model (RSM). The motion of solid particles in the flow field was simulated using the Eulerian-Lagrangian approach with one way discrete phase method (DPM). Eleven cyclones with different cone tip diameters, vortex finder lengths and diameters were studied and the simulation results were analyzed in terms of velocity fields, pressure drops, cut-off diameters and short-cut flows. The numerical simulation was verified with the published experimental results. The results obtained demonstrate that all three parameters, particularly, vortex finder diameter, have significant effects on the cut-off diameter (collection efficiency), the short-cut flow and the pressure drop.Item Performance analysis of axial and reverse flow cyclone separators(Elsevier, 2019-10) Sakin, Ali; Karagöz, Irfan; Avcı, Atakan; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi/Mühendislik Fakültesi/Makina Mühendisliği/Termodinamik Bölümü.; 0000-0002-7442-2746; AAB-9388-2020; 56785809700; 7004169972Performance characteristics of a novel cyclone with tangential inlet were presented in axial and reverse flow operation modes. 3-D and unsteady governing equations were used for the numerical solution of the two-phase turbulent flow in the cyclone separator. The Eulerian approach was used to solve the flow field, and the Reynolds Stress Model (RSM) with the scalable wall function was employed for the numerical study. The Lagrangian approach with the Discrete Phase Model was used to calculate the discrete phase by releasing particles from the inlet surface. CFD calculations were run for different geometric configurations to analyze the performance of the cyclones regarding pressure drop, cut-off diameter, and fractional efficiency. Axial and tangential velocity profiles are presented at the defined sections. The computational results of pressure drop, velocity field, and separation efficiency were also compared for the axial and reverse flow cyclones at the same flow rate. The results show that pressure drop and collection efficiency in reverse flow mode are higher than that of the axial flow operation. However, axial flow cyclones seem to be more efficient for small particles comparing to reverse flow cyclones.
