Item Adzuki beans (Vigna angularis), a traditional Chinese legume for sustainable agriculture and food production(Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2019-06-12) Shahrajabian, Mohamad Hesam; Sun, Wenli; Khoshkharam, Mehdi; Zandi, Peiman; Cheng, QiAdzuki bean (Vigna angularis) is a traditional legume crop that plays a crucial role in the sustainability of both agricultural systems and in the food protein supply. As adzuki bean has been used for thousands of years in China as traditional Chinese medicine and foods, it has a great potential to be drug candidate or functional food materials. Adzuki is a good source of essential fatty acids, fiber, minerals and phytochemicals such as polyphenols and phytates. Legumes are nitrogen-fixing systems that have long been used for biological nitrogen fixation in agriculture. Biologically fixed nitrogen of adzuki beans can be yielded so that the hazards of the chemical fertilizers can be reduced. Because of the growing requests for plant production, especially protein and oils and also decrease the economic and environmental pressure on agro-eco systems, it emerges that grain legumes, adzuki bean included would play a major role in future cropping systems and sustainable agriculture. Legumes, especially those which have various medicinal effects can help to restore soil organic matter and reduce pests and diseases problems, and they may lead to more soil fertility. Adzuki beans have considerable potential globally to be a functional food for health promotion and diseases prevention in not only Asian countries, but also other parts of the world.Item Considering white gold, cotton, for its fiber, seed oil, traditional and modern health benefits(Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2020-05-22) Shahrajabian, Mohamad Hesam; Sun, Wenli; Cheng, QiCotton (Gossypium L.) has been a fundamental natural resource since the origin of various civilizations and still remains as one of the most major plant species for humans. Cotton has a diversity of applications, principally medicinal and many other usages such as pigments, derivatives for cattle feed, different uses of the oil extracts and etc. Cottonseed oil has a ration of 2:1 of polyynsaturated to saturated fatty acids and generally consists of 65-70% unsaturated fatty acids including 18-24% monounsaturated (oleic) and 42- 52% polyunsaturated (linoleic), and 26-35% saturated (palmitic and stearic). The most important health benefits of cotton is treat respiratory diseases, treat skin problems, treat wounds, beneficial for breastfeeding mothers, a good cure for rat bite, an appropriate cure for scorpion bite, for joint and eye pains, for swollen legs, for removing bacteria in teeth, and alternative medicine for various diseases such as cancer, HIV and etc. Cotton seed oil mostly extracted from Gossypium hirsutum and Gossypium herbaceum, that are also grown for cotton fiber and animal feed. Gossypol is one of the most effective ingredients, both in traditional pharmaceutical practices and alternative modern medicinal preparations. It is a toxic polyphenolic bisesquiterpene which may have antifertility and antiviral properties. The obtained findings suggest potential of cotton as a natural resource in pharmaceutical industries.Item Pyrethrum an organic and natural pesticide(Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2020-05-18) Sun, Wenli; Shahrajabian, Mohamad Hesam; Cheng, QiPyrethrum (Tanacetum cineraiifolium) is a perennial plant in the family of Asteraceae which is cultivated for the production of six closely related esters called pyrethrins, which possess insecticidal properties. Pyrethrins can be separated into two groups of three ester compounds: pyrethrin I and II. The pyrethrin I fraction contains chrysanthemic acid products, including pyrethrin I, cinerin I, and jasmolin I. The pyrethrin II fraction is derived from pyrethric acid made up of pyrethrin II, cinerin II, and jasmolin II. Using natural pesticide may lead to organic farming, and advantage of organic farming is more beneficial to biodiversity and the environment, and of course organic produce reduces dietary exposure to pesticides. Organic farmers can use pyrethrins as an insecticide for fruit and vegetable crops. Easily degraded by oxygen, light and temperature, pyrethrum compounds are environmentally friendly and compatible with organic farming.Item A review of three ancient Chinese herbs, goji berry, ginger and ginseng in pharmacological and modern science(Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2019-12-26) Shahrajabian, Mohamad Hesam; Khoshkharam, Mehdi; Sun, Wenli; Cheng, QiGoji berry, Ginger and Ginseng are ancient Chinese herbs which have been used for thousand years as Traditional Chinese Medicine in China and other Asian countries as foods to promote good health and as drugs to treat disease. The keywords of Goji berry, ginger, ginseng, traditional Chinese medicine were searched in Google Scholar, Scopus, Research Gate and PubMed. The most important Goji pharmacological usages are improving function, enhances the bodys ability to adapt to a variety of noxious stimuli; it significantly inhibits the generation and spread of cancer cells and can improve eyesight and increase reserves of muscle glycogen and liver glycogen which may increase human energy and has anti-fatigue effect. Ginger has been widely used for arthritis, cramps, sprains, sore throats, rheumatism, muscular aches, pains, vomiting, constipation, indigestion, hypertension, dementia, fever and infectious diseases. Several pharmacological activities have been reported for ginseng extracts including effects on the central nervous system; antipsychotic action; tranquilizing effects; protection from stress ulcers; increase of gastrointestinal motility; endocrinological effects; enhancement of sexual behaviour; or synthesis of carbohydrates, lipids, RNA, and proteins. These versatile medicinal plants are unique sources of various types of chemical compounds which are responsible of the various activities of the plant. Traditional medicinal plants are cheaper, locally available and easily consumed as medicinal preparations and of course they are organic.Item Sustainable agriculture and soybean, a legume in traditional Chinese medicine with great biological nitrogen fixation(Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2019-06-10) Shahrajabian, Mohamad Hesam; Sun, Wenli; Cheng, QiChina is the home of the soybean. Traditional Chinese Medicine is a natural and organic health care system which view the body as a complex network of interconnected parts. The most important health benefits of soybeans are improving metabolic activity, health weight gain, anti-cancer potential, boost heart health, relieve menopausal symptoms, boost digestion, improve bone health, prevent birth defects, improve circulation, control diabetes and relieve sleep disorders. Soybeans can clear heat, detoxify, ease urination, lubricate lungs and intestine, provides an excellent protein food. In soybean, atmospheric nitrogen (N2) fixation happens in the nodules, nodules grow in the roots that are produced by N2-fixing rhizobial bacterias and most of these bacteria belong to the genera of Bradyrhizobium, Mesorhizobium, Rhizobium and Sinorhizobium. With the world’s increasing dependence on agriculture to feed its population, the use of reduced nitrogen derived from energy provided by fossil fuels is not likely to be sustainable. The key to future sustainable agriculture is to utilize the fundamental knowledge of the process of symbiotic nitrogen fixation in association with other agricultural crops to benefits an increasing world population. Food therapy of traditional Chinese medicine aims to maintain balanced nutrition through diet.
