Publication An innovative approach in architectural education: Designing a utopia(Elsevier, 2013-01-01) Yurtkuran, Selay; Kirli, Gözde; Taneli, Yavuz; Özçınar, Z; Yurtkuran, Selay; KIRLI ÖZER, GÖZDE; Taneli, Yavuz; Özçınar, Z; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Mühendislik-Mimarlık Fakültesi/Mimarlık Bölümü; Ozcinar, Z; 0000-0003-0349-1098; C-3035-2008; EIK-1838-2022; CZD-6216-2022Architectural design education requires a process oriented studio environment that involves creative thinking and hands on experience. It is suggested that utopias may be a valuable teaching tool within this studio environment. Despite the long history of utopias in 'architecture itself, they have been underutilized as studio teaching material. Utopias may be offered as readings, i.e. Platon's 'The Republic', Thomas More's 'Utopia', and Francis Bacon's 'New Atlantis', but also as avenues of exploration. This paper describes the process undergone in a first-year basic design course of an architecture department, where utopias have been utilized as an educational tool to foster creative thinking skills. Specifically, the process involves the creation of a utopic scenario about 'An Alternate 2012', in a different World following a fracture in time. Students have been assigned with creating new life forms and appropriately designed living spaces. The design process and final products are presented. Potential benefits of this innovative educational approach are discussed further in the article.Item Ergonominin mimarlık öğrencilerinin atölye ortamındaki verimine etkisi(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2005) Yurtkuran, Selay; Dostoğlu, Neslihan; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü/Mimarlık Anabilim Dalı.Item Learning from nature: Biomimetic design in architectural education(Elsevier, 2013) Özçınar, Z.; Yurtkuran, Selay; Kirli, Gözde; Taneli, Yavuz; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Mimarlık Fakültesi/Mimarlık Bölümü.; 0000-0003-0349-1098; C-3035-2008Biomimicry is the study of nature to emulate or be inspired by its designs or principles to solve human problems. A noteworthy example includes Velcro derived from bur hooks. This paper describes a Basic Design Studio assignment that is informed by arthropods, a rich source of inspiration. First-year architecture students were expected to offer a solution to a common human problem through the observation of the forms and behavior of arthropods. The final work required the inclusion of a mobile structure in the design. Educational benefits include the introduction of students to alternative design methods and multidimensional thinking.Publication Medium of 'curiosita': An innovative studio environment for design education(Intellect Ltd, 2013-09-01) Yurtkuran, Selay; Taneli, Yavuz; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi/Mimarlık Fakültesi.; 0000-0003-0349-1098; C-3035-2008Basic Design is a studio course in architectural education that requires creative problem-solving and critical thinking skills, a non-ending appetite for knowledge, and non-diminishing curiosity. This article describes an innovative studio environment that allows for this particular mentality to flourish and appropriate professional skills to be strengthened. The manuscript further outlines a studio project that utilizes an olfactory stimulus to rekindle curiosity. The project is an introductory exercise, using line as a conceptual design element, and a tool for communication. Through subsequent content analysis, the qualitative case study methodologically records this two-week exercise, and uses verbal and visual data, as well as written student responses to assess the benefits of this altered learning experience. The authors argue that, only through curiosity will the studio environment become the catalyst to foster innovative design ideas.
