Publication Culture shock and cross-cultural adaptation in Maggie Gee’s Virginia Woolf in Manhattan(Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2023-10-16) Düzgün, ŞebnemMaggie Gee’s Virginia Woolf in Manhattan (2014) depicts the resurrection of Virginia Woolf in contemporary New York. Having been encultured into the norms of Victorian period and the early twentieth century, Virginia is overwhelmed by an initial sense of estrangement in the modern, multicultural world, whose façade has been shaped by advanced scientific and technological developments and the changes in traditional socio-economic and cultural relationships. When Virginia decides to be deculturated from Victorian culture, she starts to adjust herself to the new world, in which she has a chance to develop herself in a more liberated woman. This study refers to theories on culture shock and cross-cultural adaptation to show that Gee’s Virginia, who moves from the early twentieth-century society dominated by conservative Victorian norms, achieves crosscultural adaptation into a foreign community by adjusting herself to the rules and values of the global and multicultural twenty-first century world.Publication Increasing drones’ combat effectiveness: An alternative analysis for integration into comprehensive military and technological systems(Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2023-10-22) Tuna, FatihWhile the use of armed unmanned aerial vehicles in both international military operations and internal security operations has been increasing in recent years, debates on the role of armed unmanned aerial vehicles in the international relations literature remain limited. While some experts consider armed unmanned aerial vehicle technology as a groundbreaking or game-changing development, others argue that the impact of this technological development is limited. This study presents an alternative assessment and new suggestions for increasing the effectiveness of armed unmanned aerial vehicles in conflict zones without positioning this study on any side of the ongoing debate in the literature. This study argues that armed drones should be supported by skilled military experts and modern military and electronic systems in order to make them more effective in conflicts. In order to test the accuracy of this hypothesis, this study examines Türkiye’s intervention in the Libyan Civil War, Türkiye’s Operation Spring Shield in Syria’s Idlib province, and Türkiye’s cooperation with Azerbaijan in the 44-day Patriotic War as case studies. Ultimately, the case studies uphold the hypothesis that the deployment of skilled military experts and modern military and electronic systems to support drones in combat increases their effectiveness.Publication A new perspective to loneliness and well being levels of the older adults: Art therapy(Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2023-10-09) Köse, Ebru; Gökkaya, Füsun; Canbulat, NergisIn this study, the effects of art therapy group practices on the loneliness and psychological wellbeing levels of older adults living in retirement homes were examined using qualitative and quantitative data analyses across intervention and non-intervention groups. For this reason, this study was designed as a quasi-experimental study with a pretest posttest pattern including an intervention (n=18) and non-intervention (n=13) group. 12 sessions of Art Therapy Practice Sessions were administered to the intervention group. A significant difference between the post-test loneliness and psychological well-being levels of the intervention and non-intervention groups was found. As a result, it can be said that art therapy is a significantly effective method in reducing the loneliness level of the elderly living in nursing homes and increasing their psychological well-being. In the qualitative aspect of the research, the views of the elderly on the effectiveness of art therapy practices were gathered in two categories: “Contribution” and “Art Therapy Practices”.Publication The politics of otherness in the time of crises: Revisiting Tony Kushner’s Angels in America(Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2023-10-14) Giritli, Mehmet ZekiThe recent COVID-19 pandemic has revealed once again that the effects of health crises have been more severe for some groups compared to the others. The most prominent of these groups is nonbinary or LGBTQ+ individuals who have long faced social discrimination. The disadvantaged position of LGBTQ+ people during worldwide epidemics attracted the attention of playwrights especially in 1980s and 90s. Although this could be attributed to the AIDS epidemic during the time, playwrights problematized the “otherness” issue influencing LGBTQ+ people through AIDS and the political response to it. One of the most significant of these was American playwright Tony Kushner. In “Angels in America”, Kushner put forth not only the problems of LGBTQ+ people during AIDS epidemic but also the problem of otherness in different levels as a social and political phenomenon. This article aims to explore the concepts of “responsibility” and “otherness”, which Kushner problematized in his play based on the philosophical approaches of Levinas and Benjamin, in light of the current developments regarding health crises and the political response. The article claims the disadvantaged position of minority groups during crises including AIDS and COVID-19 is more of a political issue regarding the attitudes of right-wing/conservative politics (which has not changed even today) rather than the difficulties posed by the pandemics themselves. In that respect, Kushner’s activist theatre proves to be guiding in evaluating the conditions of “the others” during the pandemic.
