Item Bovine viral diarrhea virus propagates in cell culture after ınoculation of ınactivated sera from persistently ınfected calves(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2016-12-12) Göktuna, Pelin Tuncer; Yeşilbağ, Kadir; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Veteriner Fakültesi.During routine diagnostic investigations on submitted serum and swab samples from three (n:3) calves in our laboratory for detecting BVDV antibody titers and antigen we noticed that successful virus propagation can occur from heat inactivated (in a water bath at 56° C for 30 min) 2 serum samples. For further confirmation of virus propagation in heat inactivated serum samples, 11 sera which were previously detected positive for BVDV were also investigated. As a result, from a total of 14 heat inactivated-field originated sera samples virus propagation was confirmed in 4 (28.5%) samples. This result suggests that heat inactivation of the serum is not eliminating the risk of pestivirus contamination, thus interfere the results of virus isolation and serological diagnostic methods including serum neutralization. Moreover relative resistance of BVDV to heat inactivation may lead to failure in complete inactivation of the virus in fetal calf sera which is an important contaminant for biologicals like cell cultures and attenuated live vaccines.Item Effect of rearing systems and shell color on some egg quality parameters(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2016-12-12) Çetin, Ece; Temelli, Seran; Eyigör, Ayşegül; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Veteriner Fakültesi.; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Sağlık Bilimleri Enstitüsü.This study was conducted to determine some quality parameters of retail brown and white-shelled grade A table eggs, which were produced by cage, free-range and organic systems. For this, a total of 30 eggs, 10 from each rearing system, and 15 from each shell color were purchased, and egg weight, shape index, shell thickness, shell strength, and yolk color as outer and inner quality parameters were determined. The heaviest eggs were from cage system (65.04 g), and shape index and shell strength were the highest in organic eggs (78.37% and 41.02 N/cm2 ), while shell thickness was the lowest in free-range eggs (0.40 mm), and yolk color was the lightest in organic and free-range eggs (10 and 10.40). Additionally, brown eggs had higher values than white eggs in all of the parameters tested. Statistical analyses revealed that rearing systems have effect on shell thickness; while shell color has effect on both shell thickness and shape index (p<0.05). In conclusion, contrary to the consumer prejudice, retail eggs from different rearing systems do not exhibit significant differences on some quality parameters tested.Item Spinal malformation and syringomyelia in a calf(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2016-12-12) Çeşme, Hilal; İpek, Volkan; Akkoç, Ahmet; Salcı, Hakan; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Veteriner Fakültesi.A Holstein breed, female, one-month-old calf was presented to our clinic with the complaint of congenital astasia on the hind limbs. The vital parameters of the calf were normal, but she was not standing steadily. In palpation, spinal processes of T10-L2 vertebral segments were felt as deformed. Neurologically, there were sensible reflexes, but motor responses were weak bilaterally. In the radiological examination, the irregular intervertebral areas, synostosis on the spinal process and vertebral scoliosis were remarked between T10-L2 segments. Informing the weak prognosis of the calf to the patient owner, she was euthanized after permission. At necropsy, synostosis together with mild scoliosis, and cavitation placed was observed in the spinal process of T10-L2. About 6cm a transversal enlargement and collapse were seen in the spinal canal. A cystic cavitation about 1 cm in width was identified in the trans-section of this area. Microscopically, foramen centrale was separated from this cavitation. There was no distinctive cell forming and inflammatory infiltrations in the internal surface of the cavitation. As a result of clinical, radiological and pathologic examinations, spinal malformation and syringomyelia were diagnosed.
