Item Chorological and ecological investigations on cheilanthoid ferns in Turkey(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2008) Kaynak, Gönül; Tarımcılar, Gül; Daşkın, Ruziye; Yılmaz, Özer; Fen Edebiyat Fakültesi; Biyoloji BölümüIn this study, the determined localities of taxa belonging to the Cheilanthoid ferns in Turkey collected by us have been indicated on the map. In addition, ecological properties of these ferns have been established, based on rock and soil samples collected in the area, as well as investigation of the growth environment.Item Comparison of some characterizations of recovered from soil and newly fermented entomopathogenic nematode, heterorhabditis bacteriophora (rhabditida: heterorhabditidae)(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2008) Ehlers, Ralf-Udo; Susurluk, I. Alper; Ziraat Fakültesi; Bitki Koruma BölümüEntomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) in the families Heterorhabditidae and Steinernematidae have considerable potential as biological control agents of soil-inhabiting insect pests. One of the most important factors for sustainable biological control is their successful establishment in the soil, infectivity against pest insects, reproductive potential and persistence in released areas. To determine the differences of infectivity, reproductive potential and persistence between recovered from the field one year after release and newly fermented (one-week-old) Heterorhabditis bacteriophora in a bioreactor, the two type populations of H. bacteriophora were compared each other on these capabilities. Prior to study, the fermented nematodes were reproduced once in Galleria mellonella larvae in order to achieve equal conditions with recovered populations. The results showed that infectivity and reproduction potentials of recovered populations were significantly higher than newly fermented or laboratory populations of the nematode. However, differences of persistence of both populations were not significant. This is the first report that quality control of some biological abilities of H. bacteriophora after one year in field.Item Peroxidase activity and lipid peroxidation in strawberry (fragaria x ananassa) plants under low temperature(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2008) Gülen, Hatice; Çetinkaya, Cem; Kadıoğlu, Murat; Kesici, Müge; Cansev, Asuman; Eriş, Atilla; Ziraat Fakültesi; Bahçe Bitkileri BölümüThe activity of peroxidase (PRX) isozyme, lipid peroxidation (Malondialdehyde, MDA content) and cell membrane injury were studied during low temperature treatment for different periods in strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa cv. Camarosa) leaf tissues. Seedlings were grown for six weeks (plants had 4-5 leaves) in a greenhouse then the plants were transferred to a climate chamber with constant 5o C, 60% relative humidity, 14/10 h (light/dark) photoperiod regime and 4 LS light intensity for 1, 4, 7 or 10 days to impose a low temperature stress. In general, low temperature application during 10 days caused a linear increase in MDA content. Native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) of both acidic and basic peroxidase (PRX) isozymes yielded a single sharp protein band with Rf=0.23 and Rf=0.17, respectively. In addition data indicated a strong relationship between band intensities and the duration of the low temperature treatment. However, the considerable increase of PRX activities could not stop the deleterious effects of low temperature, but reduced severity of stress, thus showing a reduction in the percentage of injury on the 7th day which is correlated with cold-acclimation of strawberry leaf tissues under low temperature.Item The role of pineal gland on blood glucose in rabbit pups was born from hypoxic mothers(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2008) Farhadi, Naser; Aliyev, Ali; Qaziyev, AfiqIt has been showed that maternal hypoxia leads to postnatal dysfunctions such as abnormalities in endocrine function and also pineal gland has a variety of physiological functions. We aimed role of maternal hypoxia interaction with pineal gland effect on blood glucose of rabbit pups. We used fifteen healthy pregnant rabbits, medium breeds and divided them into three groups according thirds of pregnancy. In each group two rabbits were used as controls in which they inspired normal air. The remaining three rabbits as cases were subjected to hypoxia for 10 days during three thirds of pregnancy. Epiphysectomy operation was performed on 31st day of life at all of rabbit pups. Blood samples of rabbit pups were collected and plasma glucose was determined one day before and ten days after epiphysectomy. The mean values for plasma glucose concentrations were 106.71±8.00 and 114.21±13.04 mg/dl in case and control groups in all of thirds of pregnancy respectively before epiphysectomy. After epiphysectomy glucose concentration decreased at all of rabbit pups both case and control groups but this gradient was more in controls than cases. We suggested influence of epiphysis gland on plasma glucose concentration in rabbit pups.Item Sensory and descriptor attributes of some walnut cultivars and types(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2008) Ergun, Muharrem; Sütyemez, Mehmet; Ergun, NazanThe study presents an extensive assessment of sensory and descriptor attributes of 27 walnut (Juglans Regia L.) cultivars and types. Descriptive analyses were used for a total of 15 cultivars and 12 types, harvested from a collection walnut orchard located in city of Kahramanmaraş, Turkey, by a panel of 14 consisting of horticultural students and staff. The assessment enclosed three main descriptors, and sensory attributes which were nut structure, kernel structure, and flavor and texture. The nut shape of the cultivars/types was mainly rated broad to ovate. ‘Sütyemez-2’ and ’77-H-1’ types were recorded to have the whitest shell color whereas ‘Chandler’ cultivar was recorded to have the whitest kernel color. Most of the cultivars/types had a moderate kernel fill and shriveling score. The highest score of aroma, flavor and sweetness intensity was noted in ‘Kaman-3’ while bitterness, puckeriness and sweetness assessments greatly changing among cultivars/types. Crispness rating of the cultivars/types was almost the same, with the exception ‘KSU-5’being crispier than others.Item Zearalenone production by naturally occurring fusarium species on maize, wheat and soybeans from Nigeria(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2008) Ezekiel, Chibundu N.; Odebode, Adegboyega C.; Fapohunda, Stephen O.The occurrence of Fusarium species on maize, wheat and soybean in store in Southwestern Nigeria was determined followed by the study of the Zearalenone producing capacity of the isolates on soybean using wheat as standard under tested conditions. One hundred and seventy-three isolates representing 12 Fusarium species were isolated and identified as F. acuminatum, F. compactum, F. culmorum, F. equiseti, F. graminearum, F. lateritium, F. poae, F. proliferatum, F. semitectum, F. sporotrichioides, F. subglutinans and F. verticillioides. F. sporotrichioides recorded the highest isolation frequency (96%) on maize, F. graminearum (100%) on wheat and F. semitectum (80%) on soybeans. Zearalenone determination using the Veratox® ELISA quantitative test kit showed that F. equiseti (Corda) Sacc. IMI 393764 (Sos1) produced the highest zearalenone on soybean (27.2µg kg-1) under the tested conditions while no zearalenone was detected for F. poae (Sak1) and F. subglutinans (Sek2). All tested isolates produced ZEA on wheat from day 12. Kinetic study of zearalenone production showed that this toxin was not detected at day 6. The levels of zearalenone produced between day 12 and 18 at 30o C tripled on an average while at 25o C and between the 24th and 30th days, levels almost doubled. This is the first report of F. lateritium occurrence on wheat in Nigeria and zearalenone production by F. equiseti (Corda) Sacc. IMI 393764 on soybean.
