Understanding young drivers in Turkey: Time perspective, driving skills, and driver behaviors
(Elsevier, 2020-11-01) Teke, Burcu; Özdemir, Fatih; Özkan, Türker; ÖZDEMİR, FATİH; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi; B-8290-2017
Many studies have focused on the tendency of young drivers to drive riskily. However, little is known regarding time perspective, driving skills, and driver behaviors, even though time perspective is an important predictor of many risky behaviors. Time perspective is a general construct of the thoughts relating to present, past, and future. Broadly, (i) past time perspective is related to the recall of reconstructed past scenarios; (ii) present time perspective means attending to immediate and salient stimulus; and (iii) future time perspective is related to anticipation and imagining future consequences. In the present study, we investigated the effect of time perspective on driving skills and driver behaviors. Young drivers (N = 203, aged 18 to 30, M = 25.36, SD = 3.09) who drive their own vehicle at least 1000 km per year completed the Driving Skill Inventory, Driver Behavior Questionnaire, and Time Perspective Inventory. The canonical correlation findings revealed significant associations between the study variables. Lower scores on present hedonistic time perspective were associated with lower scores on perceptional-motor skills. Lower scores on past negative and present fatalistic time perspectives, and higher scores on past positive and future time perspectives were associated with higher scores on safety skills and lower scores on errors and traffic violations. These results provide a better understanding of the causes of young drivers' risky behaviors.

Emergency management of multiple trauma patients in a level i trauma center: "Time" as a quality assurance
(Acil Tıp Hekimleri, 2008-09-01) Cebicci, H.; Bulut, Mehtap; Aydın, Almina S.; Özdemir, F.; Bulut, Mehtap; Aydın, Almina S.; ÖZDEMİR, FATİH; Tıp Fakültesi; Acil Tıp Bölümü; 0000-0002-5806-562X; ACJ-4022-2022; AAX-5571-2021; JGQ-9107-2023
Background: We aimed to find out the present level of trauma care in our ED by evaluating time to determine standards of our trauma care and compare these standards with advanced trauma centers. Methods: Between January 2002 and May 2002, 104 multiple trauma patients (age > 15) bearing criterias for trauma team activation in advanced trauma life support (ATLS) protocols were randomly included in the study. Time needed to perform the routine trauma x-rays (lateral cervical vertabra, AP chest, AP pelvis radiographies), abdominal ultrasonography (USG), laboratory tests, if indicated cranial computerized tomography (CCT) and the length of stay (LOS) in the ED were recorded. Results: Patients who needed emergency surgery were taken to the operation room within 30 minutes compatible with objective time of advanced trauma centers. The x-rays, abdominal USG, laboratory tests of all patients and CCT if required were performed within mean 47 +/- 20 minutes, 56 +/- 27 minutes, 91 +/- 23,5 minutes and 98 +/- 30 minutes, respectively. The average LOS in the ED was 162 +/- 87 minutes. Conclusion: As a result, total ED stay of a multiple trauma patient in our ED was found to be significantly longer when compared to that of advanced centers. In constant quality improvement, assessment of structural features and the methods used, on the basis of lost time is a parameter that is important but not sufficient.

Anti-refugee attitudes towards syrian people living in Turkey: Culture dimensions and motivational personal dispositions
(Pergamon-elsevier Science Ltd, 2023-04-28) Malatyalı, Meryem Kaynak; Sakallı, Nuray; Özdemir, Fatih; ÖZDEMİR, FATİH; Fen Edebiyat Fakültesi; Psikoloji Bölümü; B-8290-2017
Syria experienced a civil war that resulted in more than 3.6 million registered Syrian refugees seeking asylum in Turkey as of October 2022. This sociodemographic change has led to tensions between the local population living in Turkey and Syrian refugees, resulting in a social envi-ronment characterized by anti-refugee attitudes and intergroup conflicts. Accordingly, the aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between the internalization of Hofstede's culture di-mensions by individuals and anti-refugee attitudes and to test the mediating roles of needs for cognition and recognition in this relationship. The sample consisted of 439 (295 women and 144 men) Turkish university students aged between 18 and 31 years (M = 21.47, SD = 2.36). Ac-cording to the main results, (i) internalization of culture dimensions of long-term orientation, masculinity, and uncertainty avoidance predicts the likelihood of endorsing anti-refugee attitudes towards Syrian people living in Turkey and (ii) the need for recognition associated with impression-motivated heuristic thinking mediates the relationship between internalization of culture dimensions of masculinity, power distance, and uncertainty avoidance and anti-refugee attitudes. The results can be addressed by interested parties to reduce negative attitudes of the local population and facilitate the process of refugees' adaptation and sustainable integration into society.
