School children of lower socioeconomic status had greater caries experience and higher caries severity in both primary and permanent dentitions. Aims: To determine the frequency of dental caries and its related factors among boarding school children. Patients and Methods: Cross-sectional study. We examined 1307 boarding school children aged 7-14 for caries status and its related factors. Data on dental health and its related factors were obtained from the archive of Ege Oral Health and Dentistry Association. Comparisons of caries severity (as decayed/missing/filled primary teeth, dmft/decayed/missing/filled permanent teeth, DMFT and significant caries index,) and examination years were made. Caries trend were also identified. Correlations between caries severity and its related factors were also performed. SPSS 20.0 was used for statistical analysis. Results: DMFT and SiC for DMFT of all children were 2.35 and 5.04, respectively. 70-year-old had the highest dmft, whereas 14-year-olds had the highest DMFT. No correlation was found between decreased dmft and tooth brushing frequency, regular dental check-ups, and oral hygiene status. There was a weak correlation between decreased DMFT and increased number of dental visits in 2008 and 2009. In children received more than one examination and/or treatment (n = 269), the SiC index for dmft was 10.52 in 2002. In 2004, the index decreased to 3.57. The SiC for DMFT was 4.09 in 2002 and 2004. No correlation was identified between decreased dmft and DMFT and tooth brushing frequency, regular dental check-ups, and oral hygiene status both for the years of 2002 and 2004. The mean dmft of 32 children had prophylaxis for dental caries in 2002 was significantly decreased in 2004. Conclusion: Caries prevalence and severity of boarding school children were high even they were followed-up regularly.Publication Dental health status and affecting factors of preschool children: A pilot study(Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2021-12-01) Çubukcu, Çiğdem Elbek; ELBEK ÇUBUKÇU, ÇİĞDEM; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi/Diş Hekimliği Fakültesi/Pedodonti Anabilim Dalı; 0000-0002-1480-2907; AAH-2726-2021Introduction: Dental caries is an important public health problem in Turkey as in many countries. The incidence of dental caries is also high in preschool children. The aim of this study is to discuss the dental caries experiences of kindergarten students in Bursa and the factors affecting their level of dental caries.Materials and Methods: A stratified random sample was composed from students in a private kindergarten in Bursa in 2021. Intraoral examinations in children were performed using disposable mirrors and a head lamp. The validated questionnaire, which was prepared to examine the possible factors affecting the level of dental caries, was filled by the parents(s) of the children. Dental caries experience was recorded with the dmft index. Multivariate ANOVA was used to study the relationship between dental caries experience and past oral health-related behaviors. Results: One hundred and fifty children (49% male) with a mean age of 4.7 +/- 0.5 years were evaluated. The mean decayed, missing and filled teeth (DMFT) score of the evaluated children was 5.3 +/- 0.7. The draft score of 35% of the children was found to be 0.87% of decayed teeth are untreated. A significant relationship was found between dental caries experience and oral health-related habits, parents' education level and their knowledge levels on dental health. However, the relationship between family income and dental caries experience is insignificant. Conclusion: The incidence of early childhood caries was high in this study. Dental caries experiences are linked to oral health behaviors and parental education level and dental knowledge level.Publication Self-awareness of x, y, and z generations for dental health: A comparative clinical study(Wolters Kluwer Medknow Publications, 2021-10-01) Çelik, Z. C.; Çubukçu, C. E.; ELBEK ÇUBUKÇU, ÇİĞDEM; Özkaya; ÖZKAYA, GÜVEN; 0000-0003-0297-846X; AAH-2726-2021; A-4421-2016Background and Aim: Generation defines as a group of people who were born in a same interval of year and shares similar life events at critical developmental stages, values, behaviors, and significant reactions. The aim of this clinical study was to assess self-awareness of dental health of X, Y, and Z generations in Turkey. Materials and Methods: Total of 239 individuals were divided into three homogenous groups X Generation (X Gen; n = 80), Y Generation (Y Gen; n = 80), and Z Generation (Z Gen; n = 79) by their date of birth 1965-1980; 1981-2000; 2001-2013, respectively. Self-rated caries status, frequency of tooth brushing, frequency of dental visits, and actual caries status were recorded. Self-awareness was calculated as the extraction of the numbers of actual caries and self-rated caries and coded as o Caries. Results: Mean Dental caries status was recorded using the number of decayed, missing or filled teeth (dft/DMFT) was 4.92 for X Gen; 4.68 for Y Gen; 3.66/3.51 for Z Gen individuals, respectively. Actual caries and self-rated caries were significantly incompatible with each other in all study groups (<0.001). oCaries were insignificant in X, Y, and Z Generations (>0.05); nevertheless, self-awareness (self-rated caries = actual caries) of Z Gen were found numerically more (23%) compared to other groups. Tooth-brushing habits of all individuals were mostly once-a-day (>0.05). Mean frequency of dental visits were once in a 3.5; 2.9; 1.5 years for X, Y, and Z Gens, respectively. Conclusion: There is no significant correlation between frequency of dental visits and self-awareness measures. Oral health education should urgently point out for all generations by dental professionals, media, and governmental authorities including preventive methods, oral hygiene instructions all aimed at preventing caries and raising self-awareness.Publication Debridement could be a solution to promote healing of established oral mucositis in children(Springer, 2007-06-01) Çubukçu, Çiğdem Elbek; Sevinir, Betül; ELBEK ÇUBUKÇU, ÇİĞDEM; SEVİNİR, BETÜL BERRİN; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Tıp Fakültesi/Çocuk Diş Sağlığı Ünitesi; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Tıp Fakültesi/Pediatrik Onkoloji Anabilim Dalı; 0000-0002-3232-7652; AAH-2726-2021; AAH-1570-2021Aim: The aim of the study was to present a novel approach to promote healing of established oral mucositis and to alleviate symptom clusters in a group of children who were on induction chemotherapy. Study Design: A clinical prospective study. Methods: Children (40) diagnosed with Grade 3 or 4 oral mucositis were randomly assigned into two groups: In Group I (n=20), accumulated debris on ulcerations was removed (debridement); In Group II (n=20), subjects had no debridement. The condition of oral lesions, speech, lips, teeth, saliva, gingiva, and swallowing ability were examined 3 x week during the study. All subjects received the same oral care regimen. They were well balanced in respect of age, the type of antineoplastic treatment, and the number. Results: Debridement promoted resolution and decreased the severity of oral mucositis significantly. Thus, the subjects had less oral discomfort, pain, and nutritional difficulties. Statistics: The data were entered in the SPSS 13.0 program, and the tests used were Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Shapiro-Wilk, Mann-Whitney, and Spearman's correlation coefficient with a 5% significance level. Conclusion: Well-controlled, prospective clinical studies related to the management of established oral mucositis will lead to the development of potential interventions and improved patient care.Publication Surface characteristics and wettability of novel gingival col designed 3-d printed dental sectional matrices(Walter De Gruyter Gmbh, 2023-07-28) Çelik, Halil; Çelik, Zeynep Ceren; ÇELİK, ZEYNEP CEREN; Elbek Çubukçu, Çiğdem; ELBEK ÇUBUKÇU, ÇİĞDEM; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi/Diş Hekimliği Fakültesi/Periondontoloji Anabilim Dalı.; 0000-0002-6900-2632Objective: The physical properties and wettability of 3-D printed Polyethylene terephthalate - glycol (PET-G) and Poly(lactic) acid (PLA) dental sectional matrices were investigated. Methods: Experimental matrices was designed in a rectangular shape one-side depression corresponds to gingival col and without sharp edges and printed on FDM machine Ender Pro 3 (Creality((R)), Shenzhen, China). The physical textures, thicknesses, water contact angles were compared to conventional stainless steel (SS) matrix. Results: PETG and PLA sample matrices were clinically single-side smooth compared to SS matrix. PETG specimens had uniformly 0.055 mm whereas PLAs were non-uniformly similar to 0.065-0.075 mm in thickness. The mean +/- standard deviation (SS) of contact angle for SS was 78.29 +/- 0.18, for PETG was 72.09 +/- 0.94, for PLA was 73.03 +/- 1.17.Conclusion: PETG and PLA dental matrices might have desirable properties: being hydrophobic, non-charged, easy to manufacture and mimicking the gingival col depression in the dental interproximal contact area.Publication Assessment of oral manifestations in pediatric patients with celiac disease in relation to marsh types(Medicina Oral S L, 2023-01-01) Elbek-Çubukcu, Çiğdem; Arsoy, Hanife Ayşegül; Özkaya, Güven; ELBEK ÇUBUKÇU, ÇİĞDEM; ARSOY, HANİFE AYŞEGÜL; ÖZKAYA, GÜVEN; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi/Diş Hekimliği Fakültesi/Pedodonti Anabilim Dalı.; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi/Tıp Fakültesi/Çocuk Gastroenteroloji, Hepatoloji ve Beslenme Anabilim Dalı.; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi/Tıp Fakültesi/Biyoistatistik Anabilim Dalı.; 0000-0003-0297-846X; A-4421-2016; EVO-0292-2022; HQK-8183-2023experience, and oral hygiene status, and to measure salivary flow rate, salivary buffer capacity, and salivary car-iogenic microflora with Marsh types.Material and Methods: A single-blind, prospective clinical study with 62 pediatric patients diagnosed with celiac disease with 64 controls. Clinical identification of molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH) was followed accord-ing to the European Academy of Pediatric Dentistry criteria. DMFS and dfs index were used for the caries expe-rience of each child. The clinical diagnosis of RAU was present or not. Oral hygiene was surveyed by recording the OHI-S and the CRT (R) Bacteria and Buffer Test was used to examine the cariogenic microflora of each child. Results: The prevalence of MIH was 61% and the number of recurrent aphthous ulcers were significantly higher in children with celiac disease. There was no statistically significant difference in the CD group, when DMFS, dfs, and MIH parameters were investigated according to dietary compliance. Higher dietary compliance resulted in better oral hygiene status. There was an inverse relationship between the duration of celiac diagnosis and the presence of MIH. A positive relation was found between the duration of the disease and the severity of MIH. In addition to the higher S. mutans counts, the salivary flow rate was very low in children with celiac disease, indicat-ing a positive correlation between poor dietary compliance and poorer oral hygiene. Conclusions: In children, enamel defects and recurrent mucosal lesions may be a sign of celiac disease. Higher numbers of dental caries in permanent teeth of children with celiac disease may be related to Marsh 2 type. The pediatricians and/or pediatric gastroenterologists should refer the chin with celiac disease to the pediatric dentist for the accurate treatment of intraoral manifestations of the disease itself.Publication Development of valid and reliable tools for pediatricians' knowledge and self-perceived competency towards oral health of children in Turkey(Wolters Kluwer Medknow Publications, 2022-01-01) Özdel, Z. G. E.; Özkaya, G.; ÖZKAYA, GÜVEN; Çubukçu, Elbek Çiğdem; ELBEK ÇUBUKÇU, ÇİĞDEM; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi/Tıp Fakültesi/Biyoistatistik Anabilim Dalı.; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi/Diş Hekimliği Fakültesi.; AAH-2726-2021Background: This study aimed to develop a valid and reliable questionnaire of knowledge about oral health in childhood and a scale of self-perceived competency for pediatricians. In this way, the contributions of Turkish pediatricians on oral health in childhood and their effects on children's oral health and caregivers will be evaluated. Subjects and Methods: Items were generated from published scientific literature, other questionnaires, and interviewing notes with the pedodontists. The study group examined publications on the preventive oral health of children, and they included items related to children in the item pool. The initial knowledge questionnaire consisted of 23 items and 10 items for the self-perceived competency scale. The content validity of the questionnaire and scale were determined by the assessments of the expert team. The internal consistency of the knowledge questionnaire and test-retest reliability of the self-perceived competency scale was examined. Results: Thirty pediatricians took part in the study. The pediatricians were: 63.3% (n = 19) female and 36.7% (n = 11) male; their mean age was 37.97 +/- 3.86 years. Most of the pediatricians were specialists with 83.4% (n = 25). The medical specialization of all pediatricians was university and the working year mean was 10.93 +/- 4.28. The knowledge questionnaire had 10 items after content validity and internal consistency reliability investigations. The initial number of items for the self-perception level scale was 10. We excluded five items due to the content validity index. ICC value for 5-item self-perception level scale was calculated as 0.816 (95% CI: 0.606-0.914). Therefore, the scale has a good reliability level. Conclusion: Our knowledge questionnaire and self-perceived competency scale provide a validated and reliable tool in the assessment of pediatricians' knowledge and competency regarding oral health. Pediatricians can test themselves using this knowledge questionnaire and self-perceived competency scale.Publication Knowledge and attitudes of pregnant women with and without children about fluoride and herbal toothpastes(Marmara Üniversitesi, 2023-03-01) Çelik, Zeynep Ceren; Çubukcu, Çiğdem Elbek; Çelik, Halil; Ata, Gül Dinç; ÇELİK, ZEYNEP CEREN; ELBEK ÇUBUKÇU, ÇİĞDEM; DİNÇ ATA, GÜL; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi/Diş Hekimliği Fakültesi/Restoratif Diş Hekimliği Anabilim Dalı.; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi/Diş Hekimliği Fakültesi/Pedodonti Anabilim Dalı.; 0000-0002-6900-2632; AAW-9821-2021; AAH-2726-2021; AAH-1497-2021Objective: Objective: Pregnant women may be vulnerable to dental caries due to their inability to fully implement oral hygiene practices. Toothpastes are main component of oral hygiene and the most important tool for the primary prevention of caries. The study aimed to examine the knowledge and attitudes of pregnant women with children (PC) and without children (PNC) about fluoride and herbal toothpastes. Methods: A self-administered and validated 20-item questionnaire was completed by a total of 219 pregnant participants, 85 PC and 134 PNC. Statistical analyses were performed using the SciPy v1.2.3. program. Results: Most of the PC (57.65%; 69.41%) and PNC (72.39%; 47.76%) participants responded with "no idea" when asked about fluoride sources and the optimal amount of fluoride added to tap water by local health authorities (p= .006). The majority of the PC (62.4%) and the PNC (47.0%) had no preference for herbal toothpastes during pregnancy (p= .03). In addition, 86.6% of the PNC showed low knowledge about the nonfluoride content of herbal toothpastes (p= .023). While 51.5% of the PNC responded with "no idea" about a preference for herbal toothpastes for their children, 56.47% of the PC stated that they might not prefer using herbal toothpastes for their children's routine oral hygiene. Conclusion: The findings show that both PC and PNC participants had little knowledge of toothpastes and their contents. Considering that toothpastes are the most common self-applied oral hygiene tools, knowledge and awareness of fluoride and herbal toothpastes should be raised via antenatal programs.Publication The effect of socio-demographic factors on dental anxiety of children admitted to a hospital-setting pediatric dental care unit(Galenos Yayincilik, 2008-09-01) Çubukçu, Ciğdem Elbek; ELBEK ÇUBUKÇU, ÇİĞDEM; Ercüm, İlker; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi/Tıp Fakültesi/Biyoistatistik Anabilim Dalı.; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi/Tıp Fakültesi/Ağız ve Diş Sağlığı Bölümü.; AAH-2726-2021Aim: This study aimed to determine how socio-demographical factors related to dental anxiety of a sample of children who admitted to a hospital-setting dental care unit.Materials and Methods: A total of 305 randomly selected children (aged 7-12 years) who did not have a history of attendance at a dental clinic before, were evaluated for dental anxiety by the Dental Scale (DAS). Socio-demographic data were also obtained from the patients as well as the accompanying parent(s).Results: The mean DAS score was determined 7.7 +/- 3.1. The highest DAS score was recorded for drilling (2.3 +/- 1.0). There was statistically significant (p<0.01) association between the anxiety level of the children before procedure and their age. 201 parents (66%) had 5 years of formal schooling. A significantly (p<0.001) greater than average proportion of children were from lower class homes. There was no statistically significant (p>0.05) difference between the social class distribution of the children and the type of school attended. Children who were from lower class homes and attended public school, had a lower anxiety level. Conclusion: Children's level of dental anxiety before their initial visit, may be directly associated with child's age, the school attended, and parent's income and education level. However, a positive correlation may not exist between child's gender and his dental anxiety.
