The present study evaluates the relationship between burnout syndrome, anxiety levels and insomnia severity among healthcare workers, who mostly work in shifts. The Maslach Burnout Inventory, the Insomnia Severity Index and the Beck Anxiety Inventory were used to measure burnout, insomnia severity and anxiety status, respectively. This cross sectional study included a total of 1,011 HCWs and 679 (67.2%) of the study respondents were women. The respondents were aged 20-72, with a mean age of 35.67 +/- 8.61 years. Fifty-eight percent (n = 589) of the participants were rotating shift workers. Working on-call led to a significant difference in all burnout parameters (for each, <0.001). Age and on-call duty were seen to lead to a significant difference in the severity of insomnia (p = 0.028, p < 0.001, respectively). The total ISI score was found to be statistically significant positively correlated with the MBI subscales and the total BAI score (for each, <0.001). Considering the prevalence, incidence, and outcomes of IPF, it is important to ensure the availability and validity of biomarkers that can be used in determining the diagnosis and prognosis. In this study, we aimed to assess the relationship between serum periostin levels, pulmonary function tests, 6-minute walking test (6MWT) and quality of life in IPF patients.Material and methods: Our study was carried out with 40 IPF patients who were followed at Uludag University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Pulmonary Medicine. Spirometer and carbon monoxide diffusion test (DLCO) for respiratory functions, 6MWT and periostin level measurement were performed on the patients, and results were recorded.Results: A total of 31 of patients were males and nine were females. The diagnosis of IPF was made according to the guidelines of ATS / ERS / JRS / ALAT with 25 (62.5%) patients by radiologically and 15 (37.5%) patients with histopathological and radiological features. The mean periostin level was 32.9 +/- 37.57 ng/ml. No significant correlation was found between St. George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) score, FVC% predicted, DLCO adj% predicted values, 6MWT distance and periostin level which were measured simultaneously. A negative correlation was found between SGRQ score and DLCO adj% predicted value, 6MWT distance.Conclusion: It has been shown that there is no correlation between periostin levels and the results of the pulmonary function tests, when measured and performed at the same time. No studies are evaluating the relationship between 6MWT and SGRQ scores and periostin levels. Methods: Between January 2014 and September 2018, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), anaplastic lymphoma receptor tyrosine kinase (ALK), and c-ros oncogene 1 receptor tyrosine kinase gene (ROS1) alterations, demographic characteristics, asbestos exposure, and asbestos-related radiological findings of 1904 patients with lung adenocarcinoma were recorded. Results: The frequencies of EGFR mutations, ALK, and ROS1 rearrangements were 14.5%, 3.7%, and 0.9%, respectively. The rates of EGFR mutations and ALK rearrangements were more frequent in asbestos exposed non-smokers (48.7% and 9%, respectively). EGFR mutation rate was correlated to female gender and not-smoking, ALK rearrangement rate was correlated to younger age, not-smoking, and a history of asbestos exposure. Although, identifying frequent exacerbator patients is important due to severe outcomes associated with frequent exacerbator phenotype in COPD patients there is no single biomarker which can differentiate this phenotype. Iron responding protein-2 (IRP2) is the protein product of IREB2 gene, which is a COPD susceptibility gene that regulates cellular iron homeostasis and has a key role in hypoxic conditions. Previous research indicates that IREB2 expression in lung tissue is associated with spirometric measurements and emphysema in COPD. In this study, our aim was to investigate whether serum IRP2 levels were associated with frequent exacerbator phenotype, to evaluate whether IRP2 levels in serum are associated with pulmonary functions and selected systemic inflammation biomarkers.Materials and Methods: Designed as a single tertiary care center based, cross-sectional study, included high risk (GOLD C, D) COPD patients who admitted to outpatient clinic consecutively between December 2015 and July 2016.Results: The study included 80 COPD patients. Serum IRP2 levels were negatively correlated with FEV ml (r= -0.25, p= 0.02) and body weight (r= -0.35, p= 0.002) but not with markers of systemic inflammation. COPD patients with at least one exacerbation history in the last year tended to have higher 1RP2 levels than patients without any exacerbation (12.3 (IQR 25-75: 10.417.1) vs 10.5 (1QR 25-75: 8.8-18.5), p= 0.061.Conclusion: Serum IRP2 level is significantly correlated with FEV1 mL but not with FEV1 predicted and cannot be used to differentiate frequent exacer bator patients. We aimed to evaluate university students' smoking behaviors and their attitudes towards "Tobacco-Free Campus Policy".Materials and Methods: A total of 10,383 university students were included in this cross-sectional study. The questionnaire was sent via web-based student information system. Demographical variables, the frequency of tobacco use, the addiction levels of the smoker students, and their perspective on the Tobacco-Free Campus Policy were evaluated.Results: The study population consisted of 5461 (52.6%) males and their mean age was 22.1 +/- 3.9 years. Among the students, 3992 (38.4%) were current smokers and the age of first smoking was 16.5 +/- 2.78 years. According to FTND scores, 15.1% of participants have high dependence, and 7.5% of them have very high dependence. Although the STOP-BANG questionnaire is an attractive screening tool because of high sensitivity, it lacks power in specificity. The aim of the present study was to evaluate and compare the diagnostic accuracy of standard STOP-BANG and a modified STOP-BANG questionnaire, using national cut-off values for neck circumference that determined OSA, in a sleep center population.MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred eighty-five participants who were referred to the sleep-disordered breathing clinic were consecutively enrolled. We used 40 cm and 36 cm as the cut-off values for neck circumference, thus scoring patients accordingly and creating a modified STOP-BANG score with national anthropometric obesity indexes.RESULTS: The median neck circumferences were 41 (39-44) cm, 40 (37-42) cm, and 43 (40-45) cm for total population, female gender, and male gender, respectively. The mean STOP-BANG score was 4.5 +/- 1.5, and the mean modified STOP-BANG score was 4.9 +/- 1.5. Discrimination of OSA measured by area under the curve for both questionnaires is comparable (p>0.05). Sensitivity to define OSA (apnea-hypopnea index (AHI)>= 1.5) was 92.2% and 93.8% for original and modified STOP-BANG questionnaire, respectively. Shift work leads to sleep related problems, such as sleep deprivation, poor sleep quality and daytime sleepiness. The purpose of our study is to assess snoring prevalence and obstructive sleep apnoea risk among healthcare workers (HCWs) by using the Berlin Questionnaire.Materials and Methods: HCWs employed at different centres that agreed to take part in this study were enrolled. Employing the Berlin Questionnaire, demographic characteristics, smoking histories, comorbidities, on-call shifts, number of on-call shifts and sleep durations of the participants were surveyed.Results: 604 HCWs including specialist, nurse, junior doctor, medical student, clinical academic, health technician and hospital staff were enrolled in this study. In terms of sleep apnoea, 92 (15.1%) participants were identified as high-risk and 512 (84.8%) as low-risk according to the findings of the questionnaire. When the two groups identified as high and low risk for sleep apnoea according to the Berlin Questionnaire were compared, significant differences were found between the two groups in terms of age, sex, height, weight, BMI value and hypertension (p< 0.001 for all variables). Multivariate logistic regression analysis has shown that on-call shifts (OR=0.199, CI=0.053-0.747, p=0.017) are negative associated with sleep apnoea risk.Conclusion: With extended working hours and on-call shifts increasing the risk of sleep disorders among HCWs, surveys designed for screening can be used to identify the prospective cases in this population for further examination.
