Publication A case of a complete atrioventricular canal defect in a ferret(Bmc, 2021-01-22) Agudelo, Carlos F.; Jekl, Vladimir; Hauptman, Karel; Crha, Michal; Kocatürk, Meriç; KOCATÜRK, MERİÇ; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi/Veteriner Fakültesi/İç Hastalıkları Anabilim Dalı.; 0000-0001-8320-1286; 0000-0002-2849-1222; V-5578-2017BackgroundAtrioventricular canal defect is a rare congenital disorder of the heart and describes the presence of an atrial septal defect, a variable presentation of ventricular septal alterations including ventricular septal defect malformations in the mitral and tricuspid valves. The defect has been described in human beings, dogs, cats, pigs, and horses.Case presentationThis paper describes the case of a complete atrioventricular canal defect in a four-year-old intact male pet ferret (Mustela putorius furo), which was presented due to posterior weakness, ataxia, and decreased appetite. A loud systolic murmur, dyspnea, and hind limb paraparesis were detected during the clinical examination. Thoracic radiographs showed generalized cardiomegaly and lung edema. ECG showed sinus rhythm with prolonged P waves and QRS complexes. Echocardiography showed a large atrial septal defect, atrioventricular dysplasia, and a ventricular septal defect. Palliative treatment with oxygen, furosemide, spironolactone, enalapril, diltiazem, and supportive care was chosen as the therapy of choice. The ferret recovered gradually during hospitalization. A follow-up examination at three and six months showed stabilization of cardiac function.ConclusionsTo the authors knowledge, this is the first time an atrioventricular canal defect has been described in a pet ferret.Publication Extramedullary pulmonary plasmacytoma in a dog(Sciendo, 2019-06-01) İpek, Volkan; ACAR, HİLAL; KOCATÜRK, MERİÇ; Kocatürk, Meriç; Salcı, Hakan; SALCI, HAKAN; Sönmez, Gürsel; SÖNMEZ, GÜRSEL; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi/Veterinerlik Fakültesi/Patoloji Anabilim Dalı.; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi/Veteriner Fakültesi/Cerrahi Anabilim Dalı.; 0000-0002-2849-1222; 0000-0002-2524-3274; JPN-6878-2023; AAP-7233-2020; V-5578-2017In this case report we are presenting a rare case of primary pulmonary plasmacytoma in a dog in the context of clinical and pathological findings. A six-years-old, female Rottweiler was brought to the clinic with respiratory complaints. The patient was dyspneic and tachypneic, and there were friction sounds on auscultation of the lungs. Laryngeal and tracheal palpation induced severe cough. Lateral and ventrodorsal radiographs of the thorax showed increased opacity in the lungs and loss of cardiac silhouette. Based on clinical and radiological findings, diagnosis of a lung mass was made and surgery recommended. Under general anesthesia, bilobectomy of the right lung lobes by medial sternotomy was performed. Upon cytological and histopathological findings, plasmacytoma was diagnosed.Publication Effect of pimobendan in the treatment of pulmonary hypertension in a cat with giant right atrium(Kafkas Univ, Veteriner Fakultesi Dergisi, 2020-09-01) Tanaka, Ryou; Levent, Pınar; Sarıl, Ahmet; SARIL, AHMET; Kocatürk, Meriç; KOCATÜRK, MERİÇ; Yilmaz, Zeki; YILMAZ, ZEKİ; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi/Veteriner Fakültesi/Dahiliye Anabilim Dalı.; 0000-0002-2849-1222; 0000-0001-9836-0749; V-5578-2017; A-9637-2008Publication Chylothorax associated with ebstein's anomaly in a golden retriever dog(Ankara Üniversitesi, 2015-01-01) Yılmaz, Zeki; Levent, Pınar; Kocatürk, Meriç; Cihan, Hüseyin; Pars, Elif; Sağ, Saim; YILMAZ, ZEKİ; Levent, Pınar; KOCATÜRK, MERİÇ; CİHAN, HÜSEYİN; Sağ, Saim; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Veteriner Fakültesi/İç Hastalıkları Anabilim Dalı; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Tıp Fakültesi/Kardiyoloji İç Hastalıkları Anabilim Dalı; 0000-0001-9836-0749; 0000-0002-2849-1222; 0000-0003-1544-6438; 0000-0001-8404-8252; ABH-3742-2020; V-5578-2017; AAW-9185-2020; A-9637-2008; DDR-1481-20222-year-old, intact female, a Golden Retriever Dog was presented with the signs of respiratory distress, exercise intolerance, and muscular weakness. A high-grade systolic murmur was auscultated over the tricuspid valvular area. Thoracic radiographs showed an enlarged D-shape heart and free fluid (chylothorax) in the pleural space. ECG revealed small QRS complexes. Doppler echocardiography disclosed severe tricuspid insufficiency with moderate pulmonary hypertension, and tricuspid leaflets also were displaced down into the right ventricle, substantiating Ebstein's anomaly. Five-weeks after the medical therapy, patient died at home. The owner of the patient refused the necropsy. This is the first case report of tricuspid dysplasia and Ebstein's anomaly along with chylothorax in dogs.Publication Clinical approach to etiology, diagnosis, and treatment in dogs with pericardial effusion - a retrospective study(Ankara Üniversitesi, 2016-01-01) Kocatürk, Meriç; Salcı, Hakan; İpek, Volkan; Çelimli, Nureddin; Yılmaz, Zeki; KOCATÜRK, MERİÇ; YILMAZ, ZEKİ; SALCI, HAKAN; İpek, Volkan; Çelimli, Nureddin; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Veteriner Fakültesi/İç Hastalıkları Anabilim Dalı.; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Veteriner Fakültesi/Cerrahi Anabilim Dalı.; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Veteriner Fakültesi/Patoloji Anabilim Dalı.; 0000-0002-2849-1222; 0000-0001-5874-7797; 0000-0001-9836-0749; A-9637-2008; ABZ-7197-2022; V-5578-2017; T-4623-2019; JIX-0056-2023In this study, signalement, presenting clinical signs, results of diagnostic investigations and therapeutic outcomes of 17 dogs with pericardial effusion (PE) were evaluated retrospectively. Common findings were exercise intolerance (70%), muffled heart sound (60%) and ascites (50%). ECG showed low voltage QRS (60%) and supraventricular tachycardia (40%). Radiological findings revealed enlarged and globoid cardiac silhouette in all dogs. PE was confirmed by echocardiographic examinations, which was due to intracardiac neoplasia (n=6) or non-neoplastic causes [dilated cardiomyopathy (n=5), right-sided heart failure (RSHF, n=2), and idiopathic (n=4)]. In dogs with RSHF, Doppler-derived pulmonary hypertension was also observed. Analysis of pericardial fluids that was collected by pericardiocentesis showed a hemorrhagic effusion in dogs with intracardiac neoplasia, and transudate in the rest. In 4 dogs with neoplastic PE, pericardiectomy and tumor resection were performed. Histopathological examinations revealed an aortic body adenoma (n=1), aortic body carcinoma (n=1), papillary mesothelioma (n=1) and malignant epitheloid mesothelioma (n=1). In 2 dogs, neoplastic PE could not be classified. Dogs were treated medically for heart failure and neoplasia, as well. Prognosis was better for the first 12 months in dogs with non-neoplastic PE. In conclusion, echocardiographic examination is the best means to diagnose PE. In practice, when added to physically examination findings echocardiography also provides solid information in determining prognosis of PE due to neoplasia versus non-neoplastic causes. Survival time may be extended by pericardiectomy in the case of neoplastic PE, as well.Publication Echocardiographic diagnosis and surgical correction of aortopulmonary window in a Belgian Shepherd Dog (Malinois)(Ankara Üniversitesi, 2015-01-01) Kocaturk-Ocal, Meric; Salcı, Hakan; Çetin, Melike; Karapınar, Tolga; Yılmaz, Zeki; KOCATÜRK, MERİÇ; SALCI, HAKAN; Çetin, Melike; YILMAZ, ZEKİ; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Veteriner Fakültesi.; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Veteriner Fakültesi/Cerrahi Anabilim Dalı.; 0000-0002-2849-1222; 0000-0001-9836-0749; A-9637-2008; V-5578-2017; T-4623-2019; AAB-1790-2022A 20-month-old, female Belgian Malinois Dog was referred for evaluation on exercise intolerance. A high-grade machinery murmur, tachycardia, and cardiomegaly were observed. An aortopulmonary window was diagnosed by a color-Doppler echocardiography showing a turbulent blood flow shunting from the proximal part of ascendance aorta to the main pulmonary artery. This cardiac anomaly was corrected by surgery. Dog was treated by furosemide, pimobendan, and enalapril during post-operative 7 days. 1-year after the surgery, life quality of the patient was perfectly good. This is the first report of this rare congenital heart disease and its successful outcome of surgically correction in Belgian Malinois Dogs.Publication Unilateral ovariohysterectomy due to incarcerated uterine horn in a pregnant ewe with ventral hernia(Mezogazda Kiado Kft, 2020-06-01) Intas, Kamil Seyrek; Kocaturk, Meric; KOCATÜRK, MERİÇ; Salci, Emsal Sinem Ozdemir; ÖZDEMİR SALCI, EMSAL SİNEM; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi/Veteriner Fakültesi.; 0000-0002-2849-1222; V-5578-2017; AAH-5294-2021Background: Ventral hernias are commonly diagnosed is ewes and other animals, which are likely to occur during pregnancy, due to the increased abdominal content. Hernias in pregnant animals might contain the uterus with dead or live foetus inside. Caesarean section and ovariohysterectomy can be indicated to solve these cases. In case of unilateral ovariohysterectomy, fertility of the animal can be preserved. Objectives: The aim of this article is to present a case, where unilateral ovariohysterectomy was performed on a pregnant ewe which had ventral hernia containing one uterine horn and a dead foetus inside, however the other uterine horn had a viable foetus in the abdomen.Case presentation: A 5-year-old, curly-fleeced breed, pregnant (at 145th day) ewe was presented with the complaint of recumbency, anorexia and focal abdominal swelling. On physical examination the swelling was 30 cm in diameter on the ventral abdomen. Palpation of the swelling was painful and contained a herniated uterine horn with the incarcerated head and extremities of a foetus. Ultrasonography confirmed the dead foetus in the incarcerated uterine horn but the foetus in the other uterine horn was alive. Under general anaesthesia, caesarean section was performed with routine lateral abdominal approach. Appearance of the uterine horn in the hernial sac was ischemic and showed necrosis. Following uterine incision, a dead foetus, necrotic uterine content and placentomes were observed. Considering further fertility of the ewe, unilateral ovariohysterectomy was performed, because the other uterine horn contained a viable foetus inside. The ewe and its newborn lamb were discharged without any complication. Conclusion: Unilateral ovariohysterectomy can be a useful tool in the management of ventral hernias in ewe, when the aim is to preserve the animal's fertility.Publication Plasma chymase activity reflects the change in hemodynamics observed after the surgical treatment of patent ductus arteriosus in dogs(Mdpi, 2022-12-01) Shimada, Kazumi; Hamabe, Lina; Hirose, Miki; Watanabe, Momoko; Yokoi, Aimi; Takeuchi, Aki; Ozai, Yusuke; Yoshida, Tomohiko; Takai, Shinji; Jin, Denan; Kocatürk, Meriç; Uehara, Katsumi; Tanaka, Ryou; KOCATÜRK, MERİÇ; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi/Veteriner Fakültesi/İç Hastalıkları Anabilim Dalı.; V-5578-2017Simple Summary Chymase is a type of protease associated with tissue injury, inflammation, and the remodeling of the cardiovascular system. Chymase has been suspected to increase with the progression of cardiovascular diseases. The measurement of chymase activity can only be taken at the time of cardiovascular failure and requires tissue sampling. Therefore, chymase has not been examined in both human and veterinary medicine. In the present study, chymase activity was measured by using plasma from dogs diagnosed with patent ductus arteriosus, a commonly observed congenital heart disease condition in dogs. Moreover, as patent ductus arteriosus can be treated surgically, chymase activity was also measured in the post-operation plasma. The results of the present study showed that chymase activity could be measured from plasma in dogs with patent ductus arteriosus, and a decreased chymase activity was observed with an improvement in hemodynamics due to the surgical treatment. These new findings provide important information about the chymase mechanism in the field of veterinary medicine. In the future, chymase activity may be necessary for routine examinations of cardiac disorders in veterinary medicine. Chymase is a protease stored in mast cell granules that produces angiotensin II (ANG II) from angiotensin I (ANG I) and is associated with tissue injury, inflammation, and remodeling, especially involving the cardiovascular system. As cardiovascular events occur, chymase is activated by degranulation to the extracellular matrix. Although chymase has been suggested to be associated with cardiovascular disease progression, there are not enough reports in veterinary medicine. Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a common congenital cardiac disease in veterinary medicine. Almost all cases of PDA can be treated surgically to prevent the development of congestive heart disease and/or pulmonary hypertension. The aims of the present study were to measure chymase activity before and after PDA occlusions, and to investigate the relationships between the congestive and hemodynamic states of PDA and chymase activity. In the present study, 17 puppies diagnosed with PDA were included and all puppies completely recovered to the level of healthy dogs. Chymase activity significantly decreased at 2 months after the operation, along with the echocardiography parameters of congestion. Therefore, plasma chymase activity may be useful as a novel predictor for understanding the hemodynamics of PDA in veterinary medicine.Publication Ventricular septal defect and pulmonic stenosis in a dog(Kafkas Univer, Veteriner Fakultesi Dergisi, 2019-09-01) Uemura, Akiko; Tanaka, Ryou; Yılmaz, Zeki; YILMAZ, ZEKİ; Levent, Pınar; Sarıl, Ahmet; SARIL, AHMET; Kocatürk, Meriç; KOCATÜRK, MERİÇ; 0000-0001-9836-0749; 0000-0003-2671-5074; 0000-0002-2849-1222; 0000-0001-9948-6490; V-5578-2017; M-3078-2019; T-1481-2019; A-9637-2008Publication Choline or cdp-choline restores hypotension and improves myocardial and respiratory functions in dogs with experimentally-induced endotoxic shock(Elsevier, 2021-10-27) Ozarda, Yesim; Ceron, Jose Joaquin; Buturak, Ali; Ulus, Ismail H.; Kocaturk, Meric; KOCATÜRK, MERİÇ; Yilmaz, Zeki; YILMAZ, ZEKİ; Cansev, Mehmet; CANSEV, MEHMET; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi/Tıp Fakültesi/Farmakoloji Anabilim Dalı.; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi/Veteriner Fakültesi.; 0000-0002-2849-1222; 0000-0001-9836-0749; 0000-0003-2918-5064; 0000-0002-8654-1793; H-9043-2015; D-5340-2015; V-5578-2017; A-9637-2008Endotoxin shock is associated with severe impairments in cardiovascular and respiratory functions. We showed previously that choline or cytidine-5 '-diphosphocholine (CDP-choline) provides beneficial effects in experimental endotoxin shock in dogs. The objective of the present study was to determine the effects of choline or CDPcholine on endotoxin-induced cardiovascular and respiratory dysfunctions. Dogs were treated intravenously (i.v.) with saline or endotoxin (LPS, 0.1 mg/kg) 5 min before i.v. infusion of saline, choline (20 mg/kg) or CDP-choline (70 mg/kg). Blood pressure, cardiac rate, myocardial and left ventricular functions, respiratory rate, blood gases, serum electrolytes and cardiac injury markers were determined before and at 0.5-48 h after endotoxin. Plasma tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), high mobility group box-1 (HMGB1), catecholamine and nitric oxide (NO) levels were measured 2 h and 24 h after the treatments. Endotoxin caused immediate and sustained reductions in blood pressure, cardiac output, pO2 and pH; changes in left ventricular functions, structure and volume parameters; and elevations in heart rate, respiratory rate, pCO2 and serum electrolytes (Na, K, Cl, Ca and P). Endotoxin also resulted in elevations in blood levels of cardiac injury markers, TNF-alpha, HMGB1, catecholamine and NO. In choline- or CDP-choline-treated dogs, all endotoxin effects were much smaller in magnitude and shorter in duration than observed values in controls. These data show that treatment with choline or CDP-choline improves functions of cardiovascular and respiratory systems in experimental endotoxemia and suggest that they may be useful in treatment of endotoxin shock in clinical setting.
