Abstract
With the migration of foreign workers in the 60's from the different East and West European, Asian, African and other countries to Germany began also a literature called migrant's literature, which developed until today in different forms. Many literary works were in this era written, in which the German culture area was compared to that of the authors. In addition, these works of different literary types made it possible to introduce the foreign culture to the German readers. The story "The Homecoming or Aunt Helga and Uncle Hans" by Alev Tekinay, which is investigated in this study, is a typical example of Germanspeaking Turkish migrant's literature. Cultural comparisons form the storyline of this work in different ways. Cities and their whole surrounding fields and environments, ways of life, meals and drinking, interpersonal and intrapersonal human relations and the female image are concerned and compared often in an indirect way and sometimes directly with Germany in this case. As usual for migrant’s literature, identification problems are the center of this work of Tekinay. Additionally the story reports on the feeling of author’s homeland. Homeland is treated in this story in a very different way: Homeland is nowhere. It is neither in the country, in which they live (Germany), nor in the real homeland (Turkey). The comparisons are of great importance for the figures of the story, since they have developed also a "comparison play" among everything between Germany and Turkey. They compare everything and try to find or invent similarities. For the figures everything compared become as if they were identical with the homeland. This play becomes with the time an illness. On the search for the own identification they cannot stop to compare and identify. A further point for comparison of the story is the motive of the woman, which plays a central role. Tekinay compares the German and Turkish culture area in its story and deals also with the situation of the woman in both countries. Aunt Helga knows both culture areas, but belongs none directly. She functions as an intermediator between two culture areas and informs the reader about these from own view and own point of view. Alev Tekinay’s story offers, despite its shortness, many points for comparison to these different cultures. It was written more than 20 years ago. Therefore it is interesting to know now, how both culture areas interact and changed in this time. Tekinay’s language in the story is uncomplicated and their sentences are structured simple. It is also understandable for students of German language teaching from the beginning to upper levels.
