Abstract
Sufism has played a significant role in the spread of Islam in South Africa. Sufi orders are still widespread in contemporary South African muslim society. However, certain anti-sufi groups such as Tabligh Jamaat and Barelvīs have criticized these orders and some of their practices, and even accused them of being non-Islamic. Such groups have attempted either to ameliorate sufi orders or to remove them from muslim society altogether. This article attempts to examine the struggle between the sufi orders and their opponents, detailing their views on various social, political, and religious activities.
