Abstract
The efficacy and safety of verapamil in the treatment of patients with essential hypertension has been well established. Verapamil induce arteriolar smooth muscle relaxation lowering blood pressure through a selective reduction in total periferal resistance by blocking calcium entry to smooth muscle cells-in addition, verapamil produce coronary vasodilatation. In order to reduce the frequency of administration of verapamil, to increase patient compliance, slow release formulation (Isoptin SR 240 mg) have been developed in 1984. As the aim of physiopathological treatment for hypertension in general to reduce the periferal vascular resistance, verapamil is progressively becoming a first choice drug and the aim of this study, therefore, was to determine its effectiveness in the treatment of essential hypertension and left ventriculer function.
