Abstract
Between November 1987 and July 1989, 100 patients with neonatal meningitis were diagnosed and treated in the department of Pediatrics of Uludağ University Medical School. Sixty six percent of these cases were male, 34 % were female and 25 % were premature. Most common signs and symptoms were decreased sucking reflex, jaundice, lethargy and fever. The diagnosis of meningitis was made in 75 % of the cases with first lumbar Puncture (LP) and in 25 % with sequential LPs. The bacteria were isolated 14 % of the cases in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) culture and 46% in blood culture. Most common isolated bacteria from CSF culture were Enterabaeter (53 %) and Coagulase negative Staphylococcus (20 %) and from blood culture were Enterabaeter (40 %), Coagulase negative Staphylococcus (22 %), Coagulase positive Staphylococcus (14 %) and Serratia (12 %). Mortality rate was found as 27 %.
