Bir şiir çevirisi incelemesi: T.S. Elliot: the waste land

Abstract

This paper is on tlıe translation of T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land into Turkish as Çorak Ülke by Cevat Çapan. The first section reviews briefly what kind of poem The Waste Land is and considers the possible difficulties the Turkish reader may be expected to face in reading and appreciating it. In the second section, the question of the equivalence of certain English words and phrases and their Turkish correspondents is taken up, with the remark that such cases are quite few for a poem of such length. In the third section, the achievement of this translation in capturing and recreating the rhythm and the tone is illustrated by bringing togetlıer lines and groups of lines from the Turkish version and from the original.

Verilen zamanla sınırlı bu konuşmanın giriş bölümünde söz konusu şiirin nasıl bir şiir olduğuna ve Türk okurunun bu şiire ulaşmasında beklenebilecek zorluklara değineceğim. İkinci bölümde, sözcük ve sözcük öbeği seçiminde sorunlu olan birkaç durumu belirttikten sonra, bu şiirin önemli bir öğesi ve bu çevirinin başarısının bir boyutu olan dizelerdeki vurgu ve ritim üzerinde duracağım, şiirin aslından ve çevirisinden karşılaştırmalı örnekler sunacağım.
