Factors affecting technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) of Turkish teachers of English

Abstract

Incorporating technology into the teaching of English language (ELT) has gained widespread popularity thanks to the advancements in educational technology. This study sought to investigate how Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (TPACK) level of English as foreign language (EFL) teachers relates to various demographic factors such as gender, age, teaching years, and educational level. This study also aimed to explore EFL teachers’ perceptions towards technology integration into foreign language education. The study utilized a mixed-method research design. First, the collection of the quantitative data was conducted with 129 Turkish EFL teachers through an online TPACK questionnaire developed by Bostancıoğlu and Handley (2018). Then, the qualitative data was collected with five volunteer participant teachers through semi-structured interviews. The quantitative data was analyzed via Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS 24.0). The qualitative data was analyzed via content analysis. The findings indicated that teachers had high level of content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge. However, they reported that they were quite weak in terms of technological pedagogical content knowledge. Moreover, the findings revealed statistically significant differences between TPACK levels of EFL teachers and their age and teaching experience while their TPACK levels did not differ significantly in terms of gender and educational level.

İngilizce dil öğretimine (ELT) teknoloji entegrasyonu eğitim teknolojilerindeki son gelişmeler sayesinde geniş bir popülarite kazanmıştır. Bu çalışma, yabancı dil olarak İngilizce öğreten Türk öğretmenlerinin teknolojik pedagojik içerik bilgisi (TPACK) seviyesi ve bunun cinsiyet, yaş, öğretim yılı ve eğitim seviyeleri gibi çeşitli demografik faktörlerle nasıl ilişkili olduğunu araştırmayı amaçlamıştır. Ayrıca, İngilizce öğretmenlerinin yabancı dil eğitimine teknoloji entegrasyonuna yönelik algılarını araştırmayı amaçlamıştır. Karma yöntemler araştırması modeli kullanılmıştır. İlk olarak nicel verilerin toplanması Bostancıoğlu ve Handley tarafından geliştirilen (2018) çevrimiçi TPACK anket aracılığıyla 129 Türk İngilizce öğretmeniyle gerçekleştirildi. Daha sonra nitel veri, yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme aracılığıyla gönüllü beş öğretmen ile elde edilmiştir. Nicel veriler SPSS 24.0 program aracılığıyla analiz edildi. Nitel veriler içerik analizi ile analiz edildi. Bulgular öğretmenlerin yüksek düzeyde içerik bilgisi, pedagojik bilgi ve pedagojik içerik bilgisine sahip olduğunu göstermiştir. Fakat teknolojik pedagojik içerik bilgisi açısından oldukça zayıf olduklarını belirttiler. Ayrıca bulgular, İngilizce öğretmenlerinin TPACK düzeyleri cinsiyet ve eğitim seviyeleri açısından anlamlı bir şekilde farklılaşmazken TPACK düzeyleri ile yaşları ve öğretmenlik deneyimleri arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı farklılıklar olduğunu ortaya koymuştur.
