Abstract
In this study, the changes in circulating progesterone (P) and Estrone (E1) concentrations during the second half of gestation in crossbreed English mares were investigated. As material, 10 crossbreed English mares ranging in age from 6 to 12 years were used. Blood samples were collected via the jugular vein into siliconized glass tubes containing EDTA-2Na as an anticoagulant. Then plasma concentrations of estrone (E1) and progesterone (P) in this 10 mares were measured. Estrone (E1) levels gradually increased as the pregnancy advanced. The maximum concentration of E1 in plasma was 853.13 ± 299.22 pg/ml on months 8, then gradually declined to 362.25 '± 87.03 pg/ml on months ll. The concentration of progesterone (P) in plasma declined from 4.75 ± 2.23 ng/ml to 2.44 ± 1.14 ng/ml between on months 5 and on months 6 of gestation. Remained between 1-2 ng/ml from months 6 to months 10, Thereafter increased to 5.09 ± 1.33 ng/ml on months 11 of gestation. As a result, it was concluded that progesterone was essential for the maintenance of pregnancy in mares as it is in other domestic animals and that fetal viability can be assed by measuring maternal plasma estrone (E1) concentration during the second half of gestation.
