Abstract
In the peripheral blood of normal chicken, monocytes display pseudopods and euchromatic, special shaped nuclei. Their cytoplasms contain granular endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria abundantly but, azurophyl granules in little amount. Acid phosphatase activity are observed in azurophyl granules. In the peripheral blood of the chickens infected with staphylococci, some cells with abundant spherical, membrane-bounded cytoplasmic granules, mitochondria and well developed Golgi complex are observed. These cells are similar to the tissue macrophages. In order to determine the phagocytic activity of these cells chickens were experi mentally infected with E.coli. Phagocytic activity was seen clearly in heterophyl granulocyt only. In macrophages found in the peripheral blood there were some exocytic vacuols containing membranacous residues.
