Abstract
Heart rate variability (HRV) values are used extensively in evaluating the performance development of athletes. The aim of present study was to examine HRV during running and recovery after running of 3000 m continuous loading method at high (1750 m) and low (~ sea level) altitudes of young middle/long distances athletes aged 13-18. It is thought that by examining HRV in running and recovery at different altitudes, it will contribute to coaches and sports scientists in better training of athletes. A total of 19 athletes (age = 14.8 ± 1.3 years, weight = 52.7 ± 9.1 kg, height = 164.4 ± 6.6 cm) who regularly do middle/long distance training, voluntarily participated in the research. Participants' HRV was measured before 3000m continuous and maximal running in the supine position for 10 minutes (Test 1), 12 minutes in general warm-up including jogging and dynamic stretching movements for the extremities (Test 2), during 3000m running (Test 3), after running for 10 minutes lying on their back taken during passive rest (Test 4). Before the studies, the participants were asked to fill in the Exercise Readiness Questionnaire (EGZ+) and the Brunel Mood Scale. Before the tests, the height of the athletes participating in the study was determined with the SECA 216 device, and their weight and % body fat were determined with the Tanita BC418 body composition analyzer. HRV measurements were made by wearing a Polar V800 devices and a Polar H10 chest strap device to each of the participants before the tests. The analysis of the obtained data was performed using Kubios HRV analyzer software (Kuopio, Finland) and SPSS Windows 27.0 (SPSS Inc, Chicago, USA) statistical programs. In conclusion, it can be said that the acute effects on heart rate variability of 3000 m continuous running performed by young athletes between the ages of 13-18 at different altitudes was be different.
