Abstract
The present study was carried out to determine the efficacy rates and the duration of efficacy of two anthelmintic pastes (Eqvalan® and Equimax®) on horses naturally infected by strongyles. Twenty horses were divided into two groups each of 10 animals. Horses in group 1 were treated with 0.2 mg/kg ivermectin (Eqvalan®) and group 2 horses received a combination of 0.2 mg/kg ivermectin + 2.5 mg/kg praziquantel (Equimax®). After treatment, in weeks 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11 individual faecal samples were collected and faecal egg counts (EPG) were determined using a modified McMaster method. The evaluation of drug efficacy was based on faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT). Both Eqvalan® and Equimax® were found to be highly effective (>97%) for a period of 7 weeks. From week 9 onwards, EPG values in both groups were tended to increase. Pre- and post-treatment faecal cultures showed that only small strongyles (Cyathostominae) were present. Adverse reactions to treatments were not observed. It is concluded that treatments of horses either with Eqvalan® or Equimax® for the prevention of strongylosis should be administered with intervals of 7 weeks.
