Abstract
The tragedies of Sophocles constitute an extremely special example to understand the political nature of the art of tragedy. Sophocles brings the political issues of the Athenian polis to the stage of the citizens in his plays, primarily Antigone, King Oedipus and Oedipus Kolonos. The protagonists of this tragic trilogy are the tyrants who carried out the founding political act of the Athenian police, and one of their main themes is tyranny as a political problem. Witnessing the golden age and decline of Athenian democracy, Sophocles masterfully handles the political essence of tragedy in his works. Sophocles' artistry is always accompanied by the political consciousness of a citizen. The themes that mark Sophocles' plays are tyranny, the conflict between (old and new) laws, the antagonism between the community and the individual, the opposition of virtues, and mourning as a political issue.
