The material of the research were composed of yield, SCS and type traits belong to 3.000 daughters raised of 100 sires in 150 herds. The MTDFREML package program was used for estimation of variance components and breeding values. As a result, five indices were discussed for Turkey.Item Effect of castration on growth and carcass traits in hair goat kids under a semi-intensive system in the south-Marmara region of Turkey(Elsevier, 2007-09) Koyuncu, Mehmet Ali; Duru, Serdar; Uzun, Şebnem Kara; Öziş, Şeniz; Tuncel, Erdoğan; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Ziraat Fakültesi/Hayvan Bilimleri Bölümü.; 0000-0001-5243-4458; I-9517-2017; 16156692300; 7003939054; 15064551600; 8622951900; 7006929824The effect of castration on growth and carcass composition of Turkish hair kids was studied from weaning at 160-216 days (56 days total). Average daily weight gain did not differ between intact males and castrates (102 and 77 g, respectively). Dressing percentage based on full weight and empty body weight was lower (P < 0.01) for intact males than castrates. Castration had no significant effect on percentage contributions to the whole carcass of priminal cuts, excluding the long leg and ribs. Castration did not affect tissue distribution in the carcass except for intermuscular fat. It was concluded that castration on hair kids of Turkey improves carcass value by increasing dressing percentage, eye muscle area and intermuscular fat.Item Estimates of (co) variance components for direct and maternal effects on birth weight of Karacabey Merino lambs(TÜBİTAK, 2009) Koyuncu, Mehmet; Duru, Serdar; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Ziraat Fakültesi/Hayvan Bilimleri Bölümü.; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Karacabey Meslek Yüksekokulu/Hayvancılık ve Sağlık Programı.; 0000-0001-5243-4458; 0000-0003-0379-7492; I-9517-2017; AAG-8536-2021; 16156692300; 7003939054The aim of the present study was to estimate (co) variance components for birth weights of Karacabey Merino lambs. The model fitted included direct genetic, maternal genetic, and direct-maternal genetic covariance and maternal permanent environmental effects. Data and pedigree information of the Karacabey Merino sheep used in this study were collected at the Marmara Animal Breeding Research Institute from 1998 to 2002. Variance components for birth weights were estimated by the MTDFREML. A direct heritability estimate of 0.08 and a maternal heritability estimate of 0.05 were obtained for birth weight. The maternal permanent environmental effect was significant. The estimate of the direct-maternal genetic correlation was found high and negative. In conclusion, maternal effects on birth weight of Karacabey Merino lambs were significant and need to be considered in any selection program undertaken in this breed.Item Koçaş Tarım İşletmesinde yetiştirilen Siyah-Alaca sığırların süt ve döl verimleri üzerine bir araştırma 1. süt verim özellikleri(TÜBİTAK, 2002) Duru, Serdar; Erdoğan, Tuncel; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Ziraat Fakültesi/Zooteknik Bölümü.; 0000-0001-5243-4458; I-9517-2017; 7003939054; 7006929824This research was conducted to determine the characteristics of milk yield of Holstein Friesian cows raised at Kocas state farm in Central Anatolia. The material of the research was 970 lactation records of 362 dairy cows raised from 1988 to 1995 at Kocas state farm. Statistical analysis of the records was conducted with the Minitab version 9.2 computer program. Significant differences between groups were determined by the method of Least Significant Difference (LSD). The general mean values of lactation length, lactation milk yield and 305 day milk yield were respectively 304.4+/-1.39 days, 4966+/-32.96 kg and 4784+/-27.35.Item Koçaş Tarım İşletmesinde yetiştirilen siyah-alaca sığırların süt ve döl verimleri üzerine bir araştırma 2. döl verim özellikleri(TÜBİTAK, 2002) Duru, Serdar; Tuncel, Erdoğan; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Ziraat Fakültesi/Zooteknik Bölümü.; 0000-0001-5243-4458; I-9517-2017; 7003939054; 7006929824This research was conducted to determine the characteristics of reproductive performance of Holstein Friesian cows raised at Kocas state farm in Central Anatolia. Significant differences between groups were determined by the method of Least Significant Difference (LSD). The general mean values of first breeding age, age at first calving, reproductive efficiency, calving interval, gestation length, dry period, service period and insemination number per conception were 18.04+/-0.10 months, 27.70+/-0.11 months, 96.50+/-0.32%, 12.30+/-0.05 months, 276.50+/-0.17 days, 65.37+/-0.78 days, 93.33+/-1.57 days and 1.33+/-0.02, respectively.Item Pedigree analysis of the Turkish Arab horse population: Structure, inbreeding and genetic variability(Elsevier, 2016-12-06) Duru, Serdar; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Ziraat Fakültesi/Hayvan Bilimleri Bölümü.; 0000-0001-5243-4458; I-9517-2017; 7003939054The aim of this study was to evaluate genetic variability in the Turkish Arab horse population using pedigree information. This study is the first detailed pedigree analysis of the breed in Turkey. Pedigree data were collected from the National Studbook. The pedigree data for 23 668 horses, born between 1904 and 2014, were used in the analysis. From this data set, a reference population (RP) of 14838 animals symbolising the last generation was defined. Demographic parameters, the inbreeding level (F), the average relatedness (AR), the effective population size (N-e), the effective number of founders (f(e)), the effective number of ancestors (f(a)) and the number of founder genome equivalents (f(g)) were calculated for the population. The average generation interval for the RP was 12.2 +/- 4.6 years, whereas the calculated pedigree completeness levels were 981%, 96.6% and 95.0% for the first, second and third known generations. The mean equivalent generations (t), the average complete generations and the mean maximum generations for the RP were 7.8, 5.4 and 12.2, respectively, whereas the mean F and AR were 46% and 9.5% for the RP. The rate of inbred animals was 942% for the RP, whereas the number of founders, the number of ancestors and the f(e), f(a) and f(g) were 342, 223, 40, 22 and 9.6 for the RP. The large differences observed between fa, and the number of founders demonstrates that genetic diversity decreased between the founder and the RP. Contribution of the 14 most influential founder to the RP was 50.0%, whereas just eight ancestral horses can account for 50% of the genetic variability. Ne estimated via an individual increase in inbreeding per generation (N-e), and paired increase in coancestry((N) over bar (ec)), were 74.4 +/- 3.9 and 73.5 +/- 0.58, respectively. The inbreeding increases with the pedigree knowledge. In addition, the decrease in inbreeding in last years is more noticeable. Item Variation in fleece characteristics of karacabey merino and kivircik sheep at different ages(Indian Veterinary Journal, 2008-11) Koyuncu , Mehmet; Duru, Serdar; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Ziraat Fakültesi/ Hayvancılık Bölümü; 0000-0001-5243-4458; FFK-4918-2022; I-9517-2017; 16156692300; 7003939054The Kivircik is raised in the Thracian, southern and eastern provinces of the Marmara region and in some Aegean provinces. It constitutes around 6-7% of the total sheep population in the country. To improve the body performance and fleece quality of indigenous sheep breeds, German Mutton Merino sheep were imported to Turkey in the 1930s. The Karacabey Merino sheep were obtained by crossbreeding German Mutton Merino with indigenous Kivircik sheep at Karacabey state farm (Yalcin, 1986). Karacabey Merino is dual purpose (meat and wool) sheep breed. At present, there are approximately 0.85 million purebred Karacabey Merino sheep in Turkey (Ekiz et al., 2004). Phenotypic correlations between body weight and fleece characters in sheep should be known in order to facilitate the construction of a viable selection programmed for sheep in which all these economically important traits could be incorporated. The objective of this experiment was to compare the fleece characteristics of Karacabey Merino and Kivircik sheep.
