Item East meets West: The perspective in Roman mosaics(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2014) Kremer, Maria de Jesus DuranThe introduction of “perspective” or “third dimension” in the realization of Roman mosaic floors was, from the beginning, subject to a different interpretation in different regions of the Roman Empire. As part of the RoGeMoPorTur project (East meets West. Investigating the reciprocal influence of east and west in the roman geometric mosaics of Portugal and Turkey. A comparative study), which focuses on the process of designing and building geometric mosaics from its inception to the final product allowing the identification of discrete stylistics influencies between the eastern and western shores of the Mediterranean, the rendering of “perspective” plays an important role. With a few chosen examples the eastern stylistic influencies can be clearly identified in some mosaics found in the current territory of Portugal and their connection with the socio-cultural level of the commissioning owner.Item Floral and geometrical motives of the pavement mosaics in East and West. The example of the Roman villa of Abicada(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2012) Kremer, Maria de Jesus DuranEven if the figurative mosaics are usually the ones to catch the attention of the archeologists and the public, we cannot deny the meaning of the geometrical and the floral motives for the study of the mosaics landscape in the roman world. The combination of the different motives, the colors chosen for each motive and their combination can help to identify the influences that determined the making of the pavements. East and West of the Roman Empire are no exceptions to this phenomenon.Item From the Roman Mosaic to the Portuguese pavement: Continuity of an artistic expression in time and space(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2018) Kremer, Maria de Jesus DuranThe embellishment of pavements has always assumed a crucial role in what can be considered the furnishing of private and public spaces. The best known in antiquity has been, without doubt, the mosaic in all its forms: pebble mosaics, opus signinum, opus tessellatum, opus sectile. The mosaic, of Greco-Roman and Byzantine tradition, is one of the architectural and artistic elements that, for centuries, had been used to decorate the room in which they were placed. The beauty, coupled with the durability and strength of the material, was a determining aspect of the use of the mosaic as a pavement: two closely related aspects when looking at the Roman mosaic, which can still be found today on the Portuguese pavement or Portuguese mosaic, as it is called on the other side of the Atlantic. In this article, we intend to illustrate the continuity of an art, which has kept many classic motifs alive through the centuries taking it far beyond the territories of the Roman Empire.Item Geometric themes in Villae of the Conventus Pacensis(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2017) Kremer, Maria de Jesus DuranThe project of drawing up an inventory of Roman mosaics in the territory of present-day Portugal requires, in the first stage, a methodical consultation of as many existing sources of information as possible, both of the current and of the past centuries. In doing so, trends in the compositional grammar and in the iconographic discourse chosen will gradually be outlined, eventually allowing the individualization of local, regional or even itinerant workshops. In the process of consulting the records of Roman mosaics in Portuguese territory of Lusitania we can identify the existence of geometric mosaics in Roman villae of Alentejo, less known but not less interesting as regards the repertoire of their floors. From some of them - disappeared in the years following their discovery – there is nothing left but the reports of the archaeological campaigns then carried out and one or another photograph or drawing included in them. Largely in very poor state of conservation, the still existing fragments are, today, testimony of a very own decorative syntax.Item The mosaic decoration of Peristylia in Roman villae and Domus of western Lusitania (Portugal). The interrelationship between Domestic space planning and the chosen Peristyle flooring(Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2021-08-05) Kremer, Maria de Jesus DuranWithin the RoGeMoPorTur project, a specific approach was adopted to analyse the importance of the peristyle not only as a central element of communication and link between the different architectural components of the villa, but also as an expression of a vision very specific to its owner as a member of a Roman or Romanised elite: The peristyle, as the entrance to the villa from outside, was at the same time the first recipient of its cultural message and socio-economic power. This study aims at a typologisation of the spatial dialogue chosen by the landowner for the introduction to that message through the pavement decoration of the peristyle.Item Some considerations on the interplay composition - Surface(Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2019-09-13) Kremer, Maria de Jesus DuranWhen analysing different foors of Roman mosaic, it must be noted that the choice of the iconographic program for the decoration of one or more spaces in the same building follows, in general, the guidelines given by the commissioner of the work according to his preferences or the objectives of representativeness that he hopes to achieve through that program. However, the adaptation of the chosen composition to the surface to be decorated is surely up to the mosaic artists. According to their expertise and probably also to the budget allocated to the work, they will adapt the composition as a whole and the integrated patterns (present therein) to the measurements of the surface to be decorated. The analysis of these elements is mainly decisive in the study of pavements with compositions based on geometric schemes.
