Item Asylum seekers and refugees in Bulgaria: Between opened and closed doors(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2017-07-31) Erolova, YelisSince 2011, the increasing immigrant inflow from the Middle East to the European Union has led to the implementation of the Bulgarian policy towards asylum and refugees in a specific way. Bulgaria is a border state of the European Union where the people from the conflict regions can find security and their rights to be protected. The article draws attention to the capacity of the state institutions and readiness of society to host asylum seekers/refugees and develops questions on possibilities of their reception and integration examined by different interdisciplinary techniques of ethnographic research. The results of the survey show that asylum seekers/refugees find themselves in a contradictory situation between the Bulgaria’s asylum policy under a number of international instruments and national legislation, and the government decisions, the anti-refugee propaganda and the negative public attitudes. This controversial situation strengthens the country’s transit position in the migration corridor to other European countries.Item Conflictual approaches to nationalism in the Islamic thought in the late Ottoman society: A case study of the journal Sebilür-reşad (1908-1924)(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2017-07-31) Aşık, M. Ozan; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Fen-Edebiyat Fakültesi/Sosyoloji Bölümü.In this study, I examine the journal Sebilür-reşad to understand how nationalism was coupled with Turkish Islamic thought in the journalistic discourse between the years 1908 and 1924. For this study, I analyzed thirty articles published in Ottoman Turkish in the journal between those years. The mainstream idea of the journal during this period was to stress a perceived conflict between the Muslim world and western powers and to advocate the idea of the unity of Muslims against the colonialist activities of western powers in the region. The idea of this unity, however, seems to be articulated in different and even contesting nationalist terms. Therefore, my intention here is to demonstrate how Islamic discourse was mediated by journalistic activity with reference to varying nationalist approaches (Turkish, Ottomanism and territorial nationalism) and their ‘others’ under changing political circumstances.Item The New Criticism: Remembering the theory that shaped the study of literature for generations(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2017-07-31) Akman, Beyazıt H.; Akman, Filiz BarınStarting in the 20’s, elaborated in the 30’s and 40’s and living its heydays in the middle decades of the twentieth century, New Criticism radically changed the study of literature both in the United States and abroad. While we are about to enter the centennial of the start of the New Critics, in the midst of ever-growing theoretical critical reading practices, it is important to remember the discussions the New Critics brought to the arena of literary theory and to assess their true contributions now that we are at a safe distance. What caused the New Criticism to be out of favor for the literary scholars and critics? What was wrong with seemingly liberal, objective and humane arguments of the theory? What was wrong with blind reading of a text without taking into account any “outside” factors such as history of the work in which it was produced? Is it really out of practice in 21st century’s universities, or does today’s academia just elaborate on the New Criticism? How far away are postmodern and post-structuralist theories from the New Criticism? This paper will attempt to answer to these questions taking the famous debate over criticism vs. history between Cleanth Brooks and Douglas Bush as its starting point, to be able to provide a concrete analysis rather than overgeneralizations. Then, we will move on to two other essays by Daniel Green and Douglas Mayo shortly, published in contemporary academic journals, half a century later than Brook’s and Bush’s debate, to see the point where the discussion has come.Item Patients and healers in “Zaabalawi” by Naguib Mahfouz and a Strangeness In My Mind by Orhan Pamuk(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2017-07-31) Tekin, KuğuThe article dwells on the theme of journey towards spiritual healing by comparing the works of Naguib Mahfouz and Orhan Pamuk. Mahfouz’s allegorical short story is based on the protagonist’s search for a remedy for his incurable disease. In fact, the unknown disease, which modern medicine fails to cure, is a metaphor representing the erosion of spiritual values and corruption in the Egyptian social strata in the twentieth century. Likewise, in Pamuk’s novel, the protagonist’s father takes his young son to a Sheikh to cure him of his fear of Istanbul’s stray dogs. The Sheikh’s prayer helps him to forget his fear not to be revived until adulthood. It is seen that both protagonists’ spiritual ailment stems from a metaphorical “communal disease,” and both try to heal their wounds through non-scientific ways. The article handles the parallels and differences between the two cultures’ approach to the issue of spiritual healing.Item Seği̇r-nāme -a copy in Riccardiana Library, Florence-(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2017-07-31) Eroğlu, Süleyman; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Eğitim Fakültesi/Türkçe Eğitimi Bölümü.Within the course of time, a broad ring of literary genre of fortune-telling type has been formed around the futurology having developed within the scope of human beings’ beliefs, considerations and curiosities. One of these types is that of seğirname including interpretations developed based on slightly wiggling, moving and shaking of muscles in some organs of human body. It is observed that seğirnâmes, whose past dates back to the first written texts of Turks, provide important psychological, sociological and folkloric data about Turkish people’s beliefs, value judgments and behavior patterns. With this characteristic of theirs, seğirnâmes are a significant resource for both old Turkish literature and Turkish folklore studies. Starting from this thought, it has been long known by those concerned that considerable scientific studies were made in relation to the determination of seğirnâme copies. However, at the point which we have reached today, it is certain that there are seğirnâme manuscripts still waiting to be brought to light both in Turkey and abroad. One of the seğirnâme copies, whose names have not been mentioned in the related literature until today, is recorded in 201 in Riccardiana Library, Florence, Italy. In this article, the mentioned copy which we reached during our investigations for manuscripts in the libraries in Italy will be introduced and its text will be included with the aim of making a contribution to comparative studies on seğirnâme type of works.
