Item The female monsters or the monstrous others: George Eliot and her Hetty Sorrel in Adam Bede(Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2021-09-10) Yıldız, NazanIn the Victorian society, the fallen woman was identified with the monstrous Other as in the case of George Eliot’s Hetty Sorrel in Adam Bede as well as the author herself. Both Eliot and her Hetty were monsters of their society as they violated the Victorian norms. Through the tragic story of Hetty Sorrel, Eliot depicts how the victimized female becomes a monstrous Other. This paper asserts that Eliot creates Hetty as her double to reflect her own unrest and anger in the conservative Victorian society. The paper also examines how, as a product of Eliot’s complex mind, Hetty takes two polar opposite roles throughout the novel: a monster who contravenes the Victorian rules and a monstrous Other who is the victim of Victorian ethics and principles. Accordingly, Hetty becomes Eliot’s madwoman who mirrors her own wrath and dilemma between the traditional role attached to woman and her rebellion against patriarchy.Item Mountain destination innovativeness model (MDIM) for Babadağ-Turkey(Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2021-12-16) Akbulut, Onur; Ekin, YakınMuğla is an international tourism destination in Turkey. Babadağ Mountain, located in Fethiye, is also one of the renowned paragliding destinations in the world. The objective of this study is to implement MDIM in Babadağ mountain paragliding destination. This model has already been empirically tested in Alpine mountain tourism destinations (Kuscer, 2013); a destination which is located out of Europe is tried to be focused in terms of MDIM. The rationale is to understand links among destination environment, innovativeness, and tourism development. The relations among these concepts might contribute to sustainable tourism development and create a competitive advantage. Data have been collected by gathering the opinion of paragliding pilots who work in Babadağ. Results related to MDIM were tested by using confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) and structural equation modelling (SEM). The results may help Babadağ mountain paragliding destinations and similar destinations adapt their responses regarding mountain tourism development.Item Politics of national eulogies: Obama and Dr. King’s legacy(Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2021-11-29) Güçler, ArdaEulogy is a key rhetorical tool for the public to come to terms with national tragedies. While eulogies can bring the nation together during times of hardship, they can also undermine political mobilization by placing excessive emphasis on national unity. This paper will analyze this political aspect of national eulogies by providing a close reading of two pivotal political figures in American politics. These figures are the President Barack Obama and the African-American political activist Dr. Martin Luther King. The paper argues that Obama’s eulogy is deeply depoliticizing as he shifts the focus from politics to theological reasoning. King’s eulogies, on the other hand, are more political as he underlines the theme of individual responsibility. Yet King’s discourse also loses its political salience when he taps into the theme of equalizing power of death. This analysis is important to understand the ambiguous nature of eulogies, which makes these speeches oscillate between being a conservative and transformative rhetorical tool in politics.Item A structuralist approach to Harold Pinter’s the dumb waiter(Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2022-01-02) Alkan, HalitStructuralism is an approach that seeks to decode the encoded whole consisting of a system to explore a textual work’s deep structure from the surface structure. This study analyses Harold Pinter’s “The Dumb Waiter” (1960) according to the structuralist approach. The harmony of the play’s deep structure performs on binary opposition between Ben and Gus who repeat mechanical behaviours and conversations since they are imprisoned for a while in a narrow space. Concrete mechanical elements such as the lavatory and the dumb waiter also repeat the same activities. Although the play is over, the melody continues since Ben and Gus are given no role other than being hitmen and victims. As for the deep meaning, individuals who appear as a functional part of the mechanism show the possibility that the oppressive mechanism may become inoperable as a result of questioning the mechanism.
