Item The Ecosophy: Humanistic paradigm of the new millennium(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2009) Zagorov, OrlinThe forming of ecosophy as philosophic paradigm is an expression of the objective necessity of setting up a new cultural consciousness and vital strategy, based on the humanistic ideals of culture. The fundamental idea of this new paradigm has for its deep basis the understanding that through its cultural matrix the Man imparts meaning of being by rationalizing in a specific way its place in the World and becomes conscious the function of its own existence. The ecosophy teaches that in the long run the Man can exhaust the vitality of Gaea by decreasing her productivity and can erase key species from her life supporting system. However the Reason ordains Man to save her by overcoming its suicidal aggressive greed -- the price that all living beings pay for this great gift of life, including the Man. In this sense, the ecosophy is basic source of ideas and values, needed for the emerging and development of ecology of spirit which is essential element of the modern ecological culture.Item The existentialist philosophy of Albert Camus and Africa’s liberation(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2009) Igbafen, Monday LewisThis paper examines the practical utility of Albert Camus’ existentialist philosophy, especially in the context of the contemporary effort to improve the condition of human life and existence in Africa. The paper is a departure from prevailing mindset among some scholars and people of Africa that nothing good can be derived from Camus’ philosophy. In particular, the paper argues that the task of socio-political and economic transformation in today’s Africa has a lot to benefit from a critical and pragmatic engagement with the existentialist philosophy of Camus. The paper maintains that the practical benefit of Camus’ existentialist philosophy appears most clearly in the value it assigns to revolt/resistance, and ideals of friendship, commitment, solidarity and brotherhood to solve the cumulative problems of life. The obvious lack of all this has exasperated the human condition in modern African states.Item From the ontological subject to the ethical "I"(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2009) Küçükalp, Kasım; Uludağ Üniversitesi/İlahiyat Fakültesi/Felsefe Tarihi. This study focuses on Emmanuel Levinas’s ethical metaphysics, which gives priority to ethics over traditional Western philosophical approaches that begin first with ontology, the knowledge of being. Because ontology, as knowledge or the theory of being, includes an epistemology at the beginning, and every question about being requires an epistemology, Levinas’s conception of ontology cannot be separated from its epistemological implications. By all means, the Levinasian critique of Western philosophy is not merely a critique and an analysis of ontology and epistemology in a neutral style, but it shows that every ontological question about being fails to recognize the very ethical relation and depends upon an egoistic relation of the Self to the Other. According to Levinas, based upon human reason, the ontological or epistemological approaches of Western philosophy have not only failed to recognize the Other but reduced the Other to the Self. Contrary to Western philosophical approaches, Levinas finds the possibility of real ethical relation to the Other in the face-to-face relationship with the Other, in which the face of the Other awakens the Self. Item The role of animal reason in Hume’s ethics(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2009) Çelik, ŞengülHume’s anti-rationalist tendencies towards moral issues can be seen in the parts of his books allotted to animals. However, the problem considering animal reason has not been examined in detail by Hume’s interpreters; I think the deficiencies in both his observations and his poor analogies cause this lack of interest. In this paper I want to argue with Hume’s view of morality in respect to animals for doing so provides great insight into both Hume’s examination of the dominance of reason and his naturalism. Hume uses animals both for stating his theory about reason and for his moral theory. It is assumed in this paper that his assertion to show that morality does not come from relations ― therefore reason ― fails to be persuasive due to the poor design and choice of his analogy.
