Relations between leptin and testosterone and glucose concentrations, fattening performance and reproductive development in growing bulls
(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2008) Doğrutekin, Deniz; Çetin, Meltem; Udum, C. Duygu; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Veteriner Fakültesi.
This study were performed in 7 Brown Swiss and 7 Holstein bulls. The leptin concentrations at 12 months of age and testosteron concentrations at 9 months of age were statistically different between Brown Swiss and Holstein bulls (P < 0.05). In hip heights, a statistical difference at the level of P < 0.01 and P < 0.05 was observed at the 7, 11 and 12 months of age values and at the 8, 9 and 10 months of age values, respectively, between the two breeds of bulls. Furthermore, live weight gains and feed conversion values at 8 months of age were also significantly different (P < 0.05 and P < 0.01, respectively). Statistically negative correlations (P < 0.05) were observed between leptin concentrations and hip heights and scrotal circumferences of Brown Swiss bulls. The correlation was observed only between the leptin and testosteron concentrations in Holstein bulls (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the data obtained from Holstein bulls implies that leptin might be involved in growth and reproductive development, no association, however, was obtained between leptin and feeding performance.

Comparative study of tissue oxidative stress in hydrocotyl bonarienssis treated rats fed with dietary galactose

Studies on toxicity of galactose and its management have been largely concentrated on the lens. The present study compare the oxidative stress that occurred in various tissues of rats placed on dietary galactose and simultaneously administered with different doses of Hydrocotyl bonariensis leave extract. Male rats weanling rats placed on dietary galactose and administered (orally) with different doses of the extract were used in the study. After four (4) weeks of treatment a significant increased level of lens and liver peroxidation with reduced activity of catalase, superoxide dismutase and reduced glutathione (GSH) level was observed in rats placed on dietary galactose, whereas the kidney was not significantly affected (though superoxide dismutase activity of the kidney increases). Administration of 500mgKg-1 of the extract lowered the level of peroxidation of these tissues and significantly increased the catalase activity and GSH level, while superoxide dismutase activity only increased in the lens and the kidney. Though treatment with 1000mgKg-1 of the extract reduced the level of peroxidation of these tissues, it does not increase the antioxidant status. Our findings suggests that, the lens and liver is the most at risk of oxidative stress generated with dietary galactose but not the kidney and that Hydrocotyl bonariensis leave possess active components that may be beneficial in reducing the effect of these oxidative stress when administered at lower dose.

Cutaneous lesions associated with reo-like virus in a green lizard (lacerta viridis laurentı 1768)
(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2008) Dorrestein, Gerry M.; Uğurtaş, İsmail Hakkı; Özyiğit, Musa Özgür; Akkoç, Ahmet; Akkaya, Abdulmüttalip; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Fen Edebiyat Fakültesi/Biyoloji Bölümü.; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Veteriner Fakültesi .
In this case, a green lizard (Lacerta viridis LAURENTI 1768) caught in Uludag, Bursa, north-western Turkey, was diagnosed as reovirus by electron microscopy. In the macroscopical examination, wart-like growths were seen on the dorsum of the animal on the skin between the forearms and on the back close to the pelvic region. In the microscopical examination of hematoxylin and eosin stained sections, hyperkeratosis, ballooning degeneration and eosinophilic inclusions in the cytoplasm were observed. There was no positive reaction for papillomavirus in immunohistochemistry. Electron microscopic study of these growths revealed the presence of viral particles belonging, from the morphological aspect, to the family Reoviridae.

New combination in linum sect. dasylinum (linaceae)
(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2008) Yılmaz, Özer; Kaynak, Gönül; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Fen–Edebiyat Fakültesi/Biyoloji Bölümü.
Linum anisocalyx P.H. Davis is transferred to L. pubescens Banks & Sol. as L. pubescens subsp. anisocalyx (P.H. Davis) Yılmaz & Kaynak comb & stat. nova. It is characterized by eglandular bracts and strongly dimorphic sepal feature, the outer two sepals being elliptic–oblong and hiding the three oblong–rhomboid inner sepals.

Propagation of strawberry plants in pots: effect of runner order and rooting media
(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2008) Türkben, Cihat; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Ziraat Fakültesi/Bahçe Bitkileri Bölümü.
This study was carried out to establish a system for the propagation of good quality strawberry plants. Runner plants of strawberry cultivars Brio, Selva, Pocahontas, Redchief and Tufts, were layered in conical yellow pots, which contained three different rooting media (1:1:1 soil:straight cow manure:sand as a control; 1:1 peat: perlite + nutrients as first rooting medium; and 0.75:1:1:0.5:0.75 soil:peat:perlite:sand: straight cow manure + nutrients as second rooting medium), without excising from the mother plants. Within the cultivars, the best results were obtained from the second node and rooting media 1 and 2 in cv. Brio; from the first node and rooting medium 2 in cvs. Pocahontas and Tufts; from the first node and rooting media 1 and 2 in cv. Redchief. Although no differences were observed in cv. Selva with respect to rooting media, differences were obtained in terms of nodes.
