Abstract

Objective: The research was conducted in descriptive attribute on the nurses who work in the public hospitals in Bursa province center in order to define, analyze according to examine the relationship between their emotional intelligence capabilities and behaviors related to professionalism.Material and Method: The research was conducted between July 2013 and December 2013, in four state hospitals in the city center and the sample of the study consisted of 602 volunteer nurses. The data was collected by the two means of the Behavioral Inventory Related to Professionalism in Nursing and the Bar-On EQ Emotional Intelligence Survey. Pearson and Spearman correlation analysis was used assesing the relationship between two variables statistical significance was considered to be p<0,05 and two tailed.Results: When the nurses' sub-dimension scores of professionalism scale were examined, "Educational Preparation" (0.8.5 +/- 0.59), "Publication" (0.04 +/- 0.29), "Research" (0.14 +/- 0.42), "Professional Organizations" (0.44 +/- 0.63), "Social Services" (0.23 +/- 0.75), "Proficiency/Progressive Education" "(0.70 +/- 0.79), "Nursing Codes" (0.44 +/- 1.09), "Theory" (1.78 +/- 1.15), "Autonomy" (0.09 +/- 0.42) and professional behavior (4.72 +/- 3.35) were found. When the nurses' main dimension scores of emotional intelligence capabilities were examined, "General Mental Status" (46.04 +/- 6.83), "Stress Coping" (42.80 +/- 6.09), "Compatibility" (51.97 +/- 6.73), "Interpersonal Skills" (69.12 +/- 9.13), "Personal Skills" (85.51 +/- 11.10) and the mean scores of emotional intelligence (295.45 +/- 33) were found.Conclusion: The relation between subdimensions of professionalism behaviours and main dimensions of emotional intelligence of nurses have been found to have weak correlation which can be ignored.
