Abstract
The study was carried out in the fields of Eastern Mediterranean Agricultural Research Institute, as main crop, using total of four variables namely two different harvesting methods and two different harvesting dates, in randomized blocks trial design, with four replications during two years (2011-2012). In this study, effects of different harvesting methods on some data were determined by implementing a semi-mechanization harvesting process at different stages that can be potentially an alternative to manually harvesting process which is the most difficult, time taking and costly one in sesame farming. Some of these data as seed yield, 1000 grain weight, harvest losses, machine labor requirements and fuel consumption are discussed. In the study, the sesame variety of Orhangazi-99, which had been registreated by Aegean Agricultural Research Institute, was used as plant material. As for the cases of the study, a reaper-binder type of a harvesting machine was used. Its reaping and binding components were modified to fit the technical specifications of the sesame plant. At the end of study, it was determined that harvest realized 3-5 days before the full maturity period with harvesters could be presented as an alternative to manual harvesting causing 7.52% seed yield loss.
