Cevdet Paşa'ya göre Avrupa tarihi

Abstract

XIX. Yüzyıl Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun batılılaşma çabaları içinde olduğu bir zaman dilimidir. Bu tezin öznesi olan Ahmed Cevdet Paşa; idareci, kanuncu ve eğitimci olarak bu süreçte temel bir rol oynamıştır. Ancak ona asıl şöhretini kazandıran yönü kuşkusuz ki tarihçiliğidir. Otuz yılda kaleme almış olduğu 12 ciltlik Osmanlı Tarihi, halen konu aldığı dönemin (1774 – 1826) baş referansları arasındadır. Bu çalışma, Cevdet Paşa’nın bu ünlü eserinde Avrupa Tarihi’ne ayrılmış kısımları bir araya getirmektedir. İlk bölümde XIX. Yüzyıl’daki Osmanlı İmparatorluğu ile Paşa’nın hayatı, kariyeri ve tarihçiliği ele alınmaktadır. İkinci bölüm, Tarih-i Cevdet’teki Antikçağ’dan XVIII. Yüzyıl’ın sonuna uzanan Avrupa Tarihi anlatısını içermektedir. Üçüncü ve son bölüm ise, doğrudan doğruya eserdeki Avrupa ilgisinin asıl sebebini oluşturan Fransız İhtilâli’ne ayrılmıştır.

XIX. Century is the era which Ottoman Empire was in attempts of westernization. Ahmed Cevdet Pasha, the subject of this discourse, had played a main role in this process, as an administrator, a jurist and an educationist. But certainly he is most famous with his historian front. The Ottoman history he wrote in thirty years, is still one of the principal references of the time he approached (1774 – 1826). This discourse collects the parts that are devoted to European history from his renowned opus. The first part includes the view of Ottoman Empire during the XIX. Century, Pasha’s life, career and histography. The second part contains the European history narration of Tarih-i Cevdet, from antiquity to the end of XVIII. Century. The third and the last part is directly dedicated to French Revolution, which constitutes the central interest to European history of this opus.
