Abstract
In this study, fattenning performance, slaughter and carcass characteristics of Awassi and East-Friesian x Awassi (F1) crossbred male yearling lambs were determined. Seven Awassi lambs and 9 East-Friesian x Awassi (F1) crossbred animals were used to determine fattening performance and 7 Awassi and 6 East-Friesian x Awassi (F1) male lambs were used to determine slaughter and carcass characteristics in the study. Animals were fed in two separate boxes which had similar living conditions. At the start of fattening, all the animals had 20 kg avarage live body weight and when live body weight reached to 45 kg/each, the fattening stage was ceased. During the fattening period, animals were fed with intensive lamb feed and alpha alpha hay ad libitum. Clear drinking water was provided at all temis. After the fattening, animals were salughtered and carcass characteristics were determined. During the fattening, the average daily weight gain for Awassi and EastwFreiesian x Awassi (F1) crossbred lambs were 225 and 222 g respectively. Average daily grain or concentrated feed consumption for the groups were 5.98 and 5.15 kg respectively. Purebred and crossbred animals slaughtered at 45 kg live body weight had 21.80 and 20.93 kg cold carcass weight respectively. Carcass dressing percentage in these animals were 48.31 and 44.79% respectively. Percentage of rearleg, foreleg and tail fat were 31.04, 16.78 and 11.60% in Awassi lambs and 30.79, 18.37 and 1.72% in East-Friesian x Awassi (F1) crossbreds. The difference in tail fat percentage between two groups was statistically significant (P<0.01). In the groups, MLD areas were 19.08 and 16.082 and backfat thicknesses were 16.35 and 6.1 mm (P<0.001) respectively.
