Abstract
The aim of the study was to examine the effect of art therapy during hemodialysis on dialysis symptoms and spiritual well-being. This study was conducted with 60 patients who received hemodialysis in the main building and annex building dialysis units of Kütahya Health Sciences University Evliya Çelebi Training and Research Hospital and who volunteered to participate in the study. The Patient Introduction Form, which was prepared by the researchers and consisted of questions questioning the socio-demographic characteristics of the patient, Dialysis Symptom Index and Spiritual Well-Being Scale were used. Patients were divided into 2 groups as control group and treatment group by random sampling. While no procedure was performed on the control group during dialysis, art therapy was applied to the experimental group. Then the patients were asked to fill in the dialysis symptom index and spiritual well-being scale. It took about 40 minutes in total. Data were recorded using SPSS 21.0. p<0.05 was considered significant. Week 0 and Week 4 Dialysis Symptom Index scores of the experimental group show a statistically significant difference (p<0.001). Week 0, Week 4 and Week 8 Spiritual Well-Being Scale Scores show a statistically significant difference compared to the experimental control groups (p<0.05). Considering the findings, it was concluded that art therapy application decreased dialysis symptoms and positively affected the person mentally and physically. Applications similar to the painting technique we applied in our study (tile painting, marbling art, music therapy) should be supported during treatment of patients receiving hemodialysis in hospitals.
